When I was younger I worked a grocery store that would be open on Thanksgiving from 7:00 AM to 1:00 PM. We always had enough people sign up for the overtime that I was never needed. I just think it is ridiculous to ask people to work holidays, maybe it can be good if they don't celebrate holidays, but other than that I think people should get the day off and it is pisses me off that you make people work on holiday that I feel people should be able to be at home if they want. I am not advocating for gov't intervention just CEOs and corporations saying we want our underpaid employees to have a day off that we will pay them. Hope I didn't hijack the thread. I plan to be with my family at my parents house enjoying their company.

One more thing, soon we will get to the point where all stores will be open on Christmas and it will be just another day, which it is to some people so I am glad chinese restaurants are open for those who don't celebrate xmas. For those that want it off and celebrate it will suck big time.

I agree with you 100%

It's NICE to be able to travel to join family for the holiday, but traveling on the actual day is usually at the expense of someone else who has to work to make that happen). Even if *you* do not partake of any of these services, you are well aware that plenty of people do. So where's your outrage over that?
Until I started teaching at age 30 I rarely had any holiday totally "off". I was either standing watch in the Navy, or working one of the shifts or on call to go in when I worked in industry.

Nope. I don't do Black Friday. I don't do Thanksgiving shopping either. There is absolutely nothing I need at any store that can't wait a day or two. If I drop dead, I drop dead. Oh well.

The bulk of those jobs aren't about commercialization like retail is.

Airports are practically dead on Thanksgiving. Very few are actually working on that day. Many convenience stores are closed around here. I've never had roadside assistance show up on a holiday!

As for the ticket takers like on toll roads, the state could give them the day off and be a toll free day, but they want the money. Many states actually really need the money. And with EZPass and the other electronic pay boxes, there are far fewer toll booth workers than there were even a few years ago.

Too bad so sad for them. Suck it up! It's one freaking day!

There are supposed to be protests at Wal-Mart on thanksgiving because they will open at 5PM.

K-Mart will be open at 6AM on thanksgiving day.

The retailers are not to blame for catering to consumer demand, Christmas creep is caused by people wanting to get their shopping finished by Halloween, it also takes a lot of time and effort to set up the Christmas section of a big box store and it's easier to unload trucks in nice weather than in the freezing cold.

It sounds like you haven't been in an airport on Thanksgiving lately. I have. They aren't practically dead. Lots of people thinking that they will have an easy travel day if they travel ON Thanksgiving and celebrate the day after or the day before. Guess what? The secret's out, and LOT of people are doing it now.

Oh, and I forgot trains, buses and cruises. I know 3 different families cruising over Thanksgiving this year. Seems to be a new popular thing to do over the holiday.

And by ticket takers, I was referring to movies. Very popular activity on Thanksgiving and Christmas. Then there's football games. And heck, even if you watch the news, someone has to work to make that happen.

Our original plan was to have our formal Thanksgiving dinner at 5 PM but many family members were angry about this because all the stores would be opening then. They wanted to move dinner to 4 PM instead. After many tears, and lots of shouting, finally Grandma approved the changed time. By 4:30 we were just getting into the conversation and a group of people announced they wanted to leave immediately so they could get in line at Best Buy.

There went our glorious Turkey Thanksgiving Dinner. Can you relate? (The stores are opening up even an hour earlier this year!)
Store hours have no effect on our Thanksgiving plans. Thanksgiving is time for family, not shopping.

Maybe it depends on where you live! Airports around here are dead on Thanksgiving and Christmas day. My uncle has worked at the same airport for over 30 years and says those two days are like paid days off. He always works them for the OT and has practically nothing to do. Airports open, but you can't even get a cup of coffee exempt in the employee areas.

Well, cruises aren't usually in America. Thanksgiving is 100% an American holiday.

There's been a NFL game on Turkey Day for decades! Detroit Lions have been playing that day for practically forever! Those games sell well. If you don't to work those days, then someone else will be happy to have a job! Wait you get paid to walk around selling beer and then you get to watch a game for free when all these suckers around you paid $50+ to watch the same game? Suckers!
