You're an adult. If you want to change your name to Big Bird, go for it! I have a unique name that I have hated since elementary school. I HATE telling people my name. I HATE it. I keep thinking about changing it, but I should have done it when I was much younger. I just think my name is dreadful. I'd rather be called Poop For Brains all day! So I feel your pain. Gertrude would be an upgrade compared to my name.
Well now we're all curious!

The SS 20 was a Soviet nuclear tipped missile, code name Saber. So I'm guessing the name is Saber. Different, but not that bad.

I will give you practical advice. If you think you MIGHT consider changing your last name in marriage, wait until then and do it all at once. Use a nickname until then (though not on documents). Unless you are diametrically opposed to this possibility, you may very well meet a man to whom this is really important. Then you will have had three names. Gertrude Lastname, Allison Lastname, then Allison Hubbyname.

So that's something to think about.

You also might consider asking your mom to weigh in on your new name choice. If she refuses, then at least you offered.
That won't work because you're dealing with 2 different court systems. OPs last name can be changed by civil union, or marriage by the judge during those proceedings legally, but in order to legally change her first name she's got to petition a different court and judge. You can only change your last name when you get married.

It happens. Personally I'd say mom is getting off easy. Somewhere in the country there is a mother grappling with the fact that their child wants to change their name from Gertrude to Gerard. Or Laura to Leon. Or Maury to Mary. At least in those cases the child 'liked' the name. It just wouldn't be appropriate anymore. Small comfort. <snap!> What about Gina? Or Gwen? Then those monogrammed sweaters wouldn't be a total loss.
Well, glad I could straighten out your sports-trivia knowledge!

In 2000, Sports Illustrated came to the assisted living where she resided and interviewed her for their end-of-the-century edition. She had her gold medals from the 1924 Olympics on the wall and her photo from the Daily News from 1926 after she swam the Channel on her wall. My daughter was little, and I brought her and some of my other Girl Scouts there to meet her. (My grandmother was her roommate at the time.)

HAHAHAHA oh the joke is on you! The SS in my screen name has to do with the SS from Chevy. The 20 is a driver's number. The TS are someone's initials. Nothing at all to do with the Soviet Union, missiles, guns, swords, nothing, not even close. Oh this is hilarious! And NO my name is not Saber.....man that would be an improvement!

I changed my last name, and did variations of the first and middle. My mother had a fit, but she got over it. That was in 1997, and it cost $100, which included posting it in any publication for 30 days, to ensure that there was no objection to it.
