My father is like this. Always been like this, now that he’s retired, it’s even worse. He just sits around the house, maybe watching a bit of t.v. or playing around with his smartphone. I’d be bored outta of my mind just sitting around and just daydreaming to pass time. I don’t understand how someone not realize there’s more to life than just sitting around everyday
Most (ok many) "older" people have the idea that the best part of their life is behind them. This really gives them nothing to look forward to or strive for. They have given up on life and are just waiting to die.
Remember this when you are older and don't fall into this trap. It's really sad.
OP you don't have to understand it. He worked a lot of years to provide for you and the rest of his family. He can do as he pleases. Take care of your own life and stop trying to control his.
It's his life. Let him live his own life the way he wants and don't expect him to live his life according to your standards. Did it ever occur to you that maybe he's not well and is tired and has no energy? When you are older and retired you will understand why many retired people just want to kick back and daydream. If he gets too bored he'll eventually take up some hobby or activity that he enjoys.

He's not doing NOTHING. Even if he's asleep his brain is busy. His mind may be rummaging happily around reliving the past. He might be concocting a novel. He could be making plans for a vacation or house renovation. He may find social interaction or games his phone gives access to intriguing now that he has time to spend on it. Who knows? Until you can see into his brain you can't claim to know how much or how little he is doing. The difference could be that in the past he was physically more active. Now he may be mentally more active. Its his time to do what he wants. Quit judging him. Who gave you the title of spare time police?

As we get older our bodies no longer do what we want them to do. I want to climb mountains, hike, be out in the sun, etc,but life before 50 has taken a serious toll on my body, not to mention auto immune disease. It's not that we don't want to, sometimes we can't.
