And what does someone's supporting gay marriage (as I do) have to do with your disgusting personal air pollution? What does anyone's political party (I voted for Obama twice) have to do with the fact that I know that you need to quit smoking?

OpenD, I think there are so many comments on this one because it's so easy and fun to poke holes in the OP's so-called argument. I've had a lot of laughs today at his/her/its expense, and I thank them for making the forum fun for the afternoon!
Obviously what is disgusting to you, is not disgusting to another. People have subjective values, and such leniency to legislation is ripe for the people who are naturally attracted to seats of power in the first place. In other words, your worldview leads to totalitarian societies. Your first line is so hilariously cognitive dissonant I'm the one laughing.

I love how everyone automatically jumps to Gays. What happened to prostitutes, organ sellers, pimps, and all sorts of other 'outcasts' whose activities violate no ones rights yet, are continuously harassed, prosecuted, extorted, and imprisoned. Oh, but they're disgusting. Eww. Eww. Fighting for equal rights my ass. Speaking of, when are they going to get rid of Affirmative Action? How racist can it get! A person should be hired based on qualifications not on quota's or based on the amount of pigment in their skin.

That is a really odd statement from someone who said they were in military - so, should veteran hiring preferences be banned as well?

The public has a right to clean, smoke-free air.

This thread is a great help in educating about the usefulness of increasing taxes on cigarettes in Hawaii. Thanks for keeping this thread going!

The cigarette industry has long recognized that raising taxes on tobacco will result in a decrease in smoking:

Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids:

Quote:
Philip Morris: Of all the concerns, there is one - taxation - that alarms us the most. While marketing restrictions and public and passive smoking [restrictions] do depress volume, in our experience taxation depresses it much more severely.

Philip Morris: When the tax goes up, industry loses volume and profits as many smokers cut back.

Philip Morris: A high cigarette price, more than any other cigarette attribute, has the most dramatic impact on the share of the quitting population…price, not tar level, is the main driving force for quitting.
Fact about smoking:

Quote:
Smoking kills more people than alcohol, AIDS, car crashes, illegal drugs, murders, and suicides combined — and thousands more die from other tobacco-related causes — such as fires caused by smoking (more than 1,000 deaths/year nationwide) and smokeless tobacco use.
Think smoking doesn't concern the non-smoker? Because of this:

Quote:
Annual health care costs in Hawaii directly caused by smoking: $336 million.
It results in this: Hawaii's tax burden per household:

Quote:
[Hawaii] Residents' state & federal tax burden from smoking-caused government expenditures: $617 per household

LOL! I was a smoker many years ago, and never realized I was keeping such esteemed company as those you've identified above!
I assume most of them were MAKING money, while I was wasting it on cigarettes.
Thank you all for an evening's entertainment!
BTW: I took a short break and booked 3 nights at the Palazzo in LV for this weekend. Chances are, I will run into some of the maligned groups you mentioned. Possibly even some smokers!

The public are not exposed to the smoke in my house, just the exhaust from all the cars driving around, but you don't seem to have a problem with that. I guess because that affects you personally. Sounds like another right wing nutball.

This thread is for smokers rights in hawaii, not some quit smoking seminar. If you would like to share tips on why and how people can quit smoking, please take it to another forum/thread. Mahalo

As a dictum of Government policy yes. I've stated as much in a previous post on the forum, though a bit more cryptically I admit. If private individuals wish to hire based on veterancy criteria, that is their choice, and their property (money) to do as they wish, I just do not like the Government violating property rights.

Sadly it is what the fanatics have done to smokers. Pariahs, and its worse when enforced through the State. If you want to ostracize someone and not host them on your property for smoking, good for you, it's your right to do so, but to enforce your view on the entirity of the rest of society is pretty...tyrannical.

Better watch your back or you might catch the cooties, or be berated by the puritanical forces so prevalent in today's America. Lord have mercy if you have a life style 'outside the norm'.

Ah, yes, the old it is socialized therefore I get to tell you mofo's how to live and you better damn well take it up your you know what. I always laugh when people extol virtues of socialism and then in the same breath proclaim to protect civil liberties. Ha! They're INCOMPATIBLE ideals for the exact reason you brought up, not to mention again though, it is a non-sequitur. Next thing you know we're going to be hearing about how we need to tax salt, polyunsaturated fats, candy, and anything 'bad' for you because 'I'm' paying for your healthcare. All aboard 1984!
