Stop hating people who have done better than you (financially). A lot of anger in this thread is driven by envy. Learn to appreciate all aspects of life, not just the material. If you want to be very wealthy, get educated, work day and night at a profession that pays well, make connections with successful people, and pass your wealth and values down to the next generation so they can pick up where you left off.
You are right, but will now be unpopular with the complainers.

CA is the 8th largest economy. However, the Federal Govt is siphoning billions of CA federal tax dollars and giving it to bailout the poor red states.

Top 10 States That Rely Most on Federal Aid

The 10 states receiving the most in federal aid as a percentage of their general revenue, in order, were:
  1. Mississippi, 42.9% federal aid as percentage of general revenue
  2. Louisiana, 41.9%
  3. Tennessee, 39.5%
  4. South Dakota, 39.0%
  5. Missouri, 38.2%
  6. Montana, 37.4%
  7. Georgia, 37.3%
  8. New Mexico, 36.6%
  9. Alabama, 36.1%
  10. Maine, 35.3%

CA puts the most federal tax dollar into the system, but receives very little back. That's why we're broke.

At the other end, the 10 states receiving the least in federal aid as a percentage of their general revenues were:
40. Illinois, 25.9%
41. New Jersey, 25.5%
42. California, 25.0%
43. Nevada, 25.0%
44. Kansas, 24.9%
45. Delaware, 24.8%
46. Connecticut, 23.4%
47. Virginia, 22.9%
48. Alaska, 22.4%
49. Hawaii, 21.5%
50. North Dakota, 19.0%

Does it matter? This thread is still active and the data I posted is relevant even to this day. CA pays over $369 billion in taxes. Which the feds uses to sprinkle around to the poor red states. Funny how they scream against socialism while at the same time benefit from it.

I get it. They don't want to pay taxes, but have no problem accepting welfare. Pretty nice scam they got going on. (Give their citizen tax cuts, while begging the feds to make up the difference).

I think what's more important here is the state's general revenue. 17% of 100 is substantially different than 17% of 10,000.

I work for an OC company where a lot of the single employees earn about $15 an hour. I don't know what they're doing there. In NW Montana, where I live, Panda Express pays cooks $13 an hour and you can rent a 5BR house with a huge yard on a river for about $1,450. No sales tax either.

But yeah, it's not quite as sunny here in Montana.

a lot people are professionals earning $100-200k, so that's $200-400k as a couple.. then these people have made tremendous gains on real estate (hundreds of thousands since '08-12) and the stock market has tripled since 2008 and at this rate will quadruple shortly so it's easy to see how everyone here is feeling rich. In addition OC probably has a disproportionate number of entrepreneurs and consultants with business income so they get to exploit the system to the core and not pay very much in tax. I know a fellow Engineer who was a consultant and made $180,000/yr and paid something like 10% overall tax.. he used to writeoff everything including virtually all the food he consumed when we met.

Glad you have no problems with welfare since Ca has the most people on it.
here's an article

CA also has the higest population so of course they will have more people on it.

But when you count it as a population, only 11% of CA residents are on welfare.

Compared to the Red states which have about 20% of it's population on welfare.

It's Official: The States With The Highest Numbers of Welfare Recipients are GOP-Controlled RED STATES! Americans Against the Tea Party

That's pretty pathetic. A smaller state should be able to care more for their smaller population and have them become successful productive citizens . Just like Private school are able to care for their students due to the smaller numbers of students.

Yet red states have the most people on welfare. Pretty sad for state that is anti Socialism. So not only do they have more people on welfare, they also beg for the most money from the Federal Govt.
