LOL, there is no grand conspiracy by the Europeans to "make" us drive subcompacts. Fiat isn't dumb, they knew the microcar segment is a niche market in the U.S. They've sold over 100,000 of them since they were introduced. Not a rousing success but not a failure either.

I see Mini's all the time and they've been here for almost 2 decades now, so the small car style itself isn't the problem. It's probably all the bad rankings it's always getting.

I haven't seen a Smart Car in ages either.

They were intending to compete with Mini, but failed since Mini has the backing of BMW which keeps them with the latest technology. Fiat doesn't have that luxury.

No but they have Ferrari, and Maserati, and Lancia So I think Fiat is ok with their technology. I wouldn't call these cars as slouches would you I bet you would buy a Ferrari wouldn't you.

Actually FIAT is a bigger company than BMW. FCA revenues in 2016 were €111 billion on unit sales of 4.72 million vehicles. BMW had 2016 revenue of €86.4 billion on unit sales of 2.4 million units. Yes, BMW is more profitable but they also ignore a large chunk of the market where FIAT does businesss.

IMHO, the issue with Fiat - not just the 500 - in North America is that it is a lifestyle brand. The product is cute but for the majority of the buying public, it doesn't work.

I really think that Sergio thought that he could keep the RAM and Jeep brands, get rid of Dodge and Chrysler (except for the T&C/Pacifica and Challenger) and use them as a launching pad for the FIAT, Alfa, and Maserati brands in the US. Unfortunately, the economy recovered and gas prices went down. Hence the current expansion of the RAM and Jeep production.

Do poor people in Europe purchase brand new cars? It's generally unheard of in the US. Most struggle to afford an older used car. Also, I guess it depends on your definition of poor.

We dont live in that alternate universe yet, though- bad cars do exist. My old Mercedes ML350 BlueTec is a perfect example. The standard ML350 was determined to have maintenance costs that were 8% higher than the average across all models for 2013, but the diesel was 180% higher than the average. Sometimes the check engine light would illuminate on the drive home from the dealership after having it repaired, only to find that it was an entirely different problem.

So, if a car is at the bottom of the list for reliability, and other truly terrible cars exist, then it's hardly a case of "every car is good and this one is less good".

Albuquerque must be an outlier. I see a good number of Minis, Smart cars, and even a fair number of Fiat 500s around.

It seems if someone in New Mexico doesn't want a huge pickup or SUV, they drive a tiny compact.

Lancia isn't the innovative brand it once was. It is now sold only in Italy and before its restriction to the home country it was nothing more than stylish and more expensive FIAT cars.

The only Lancia car sold to the public today is this car based upon the FIAT 500

Managed to take a peek at a Carmax appraisal form. A two year old 500 was appraised for $5000, and even that is too much.
Jennifer Lopez drives a Fiat 500, therefore its legit.
