Why does it always have to be one extreme or the other?

No, I wouldn't do that. I do let my 6 and 8 year old play in the front yard without constant supervision though.

OP, if you live in a small town and it's easy for her to get home, I'd do it. Does she have a watch?

I did everything around the neighborhood without my parent at 8. None of the above things are likely to happen at all, and I'm assuming she knows what to do if they do.

This day and age is no different that way to our day and age. Perhaps if you were in some kind of dodgy neighborhood it wouldn't be a good idea, but there's no more danger now than there was back in our day.

I think it's a great thing, go for it.

Exactly. I appreciate that parents might not be comfortable sending their kids to the park alone but the reasons shouldn't be that "creeps" are out to kidnap their kids. Its SAFER now than it was when I was a kid in the 80s.

We live right next door to the playground. My 8yo takes the walkie talkie. I would not do it on a scheduled event. She is a very responsible 8.

A lot of families in our neighborhood do the walkie talkie thing, an excellent idea.

So why post looking for opinions ?!?!?!?!?!?!?

You obviously have your mind made up so what is the point of this thread?????

People start threads to get hypothetical opinions all the time. I don't think the OP was asking for opinions on what s/he should actually do; more so taking a survey to see what others would do.

Missing the point perhaps? Did you read any of the links?

The idea behind this is to develop a sense of community. Kids meet other kids, neighbors keep an eye on the kids, kids can actually play without someone hovering, kids learn to be resourceful, use their discression, etc.

Don't do it if you feel so strongly against it, but perhaps think it through before casting aspersions.
