This characterization may be an over statement, however it IS hard to comprehend how modern educators could possibly think this pathetic episode would solve ANY problem that exists with the mother or the child. It is completely misguided and primitive at the very least.

LOTS of different things. Dusting bookshelves in the school library. Cleaning windows. Packaging plastic utensils for a soup kitchen. Helping to empty wastebaskets in the school. Raking leaves. Pulling weeds. Maybe some of it would be busy work, but that's fine.

Didn't you have some innocuous chores as a 5 year old? I sure as heck did.

Exactly. The kid clearly does not have a rosy home life. He appears to have major aggression issues, and probably emotional ones too. So the school puts him through something like this and expects such issues to improve?

Ugh. So simple-minded and ridiculous.

Thank God I live in a state where something this primitive and absurd is illegal. Maybe the other states will learn eventually.

But here the child was hit because the mother chose that as his punishment, for HIS actions not hers.

And as I previous said, I would not choose that option and subject my children to that, whether for my actions or for theirs.
Not true.

She was given the "choice" of THEM hitting the kid or HER going to jail.

Spanking vs not spanking has a miniscule effect compared to good vs sh---y parenting.

Yes, and the choices offered should not be: 1. ineffective 2. equally ineffective

Perhaps she was wondering who would care for the child if she was jailed. Clearly, her parenting is sorely lacking, but that isn't the fault of the child. Corporal punishment has no place in public (or any IMO) school.

Replace "fascinating" with "disgusting," and me too.

It doesn't. It teaches them that hitting is okay if you're big enough or don't get caught.
