The poster who initially referred to "butt cheeks" had kids say it to get them to smile. I think it's kind of creative and cute.
People get offended at way to much and way too easily these days.
I'm the poster who said it.
It was sort of inspired by my late mother who was a very sweet person and had a very silly sense of humor. Sometimes when she was trying to get us to smile for a photo she would look at us and exclaim, "say sh*t!". We knew better than to say it, but it got us to smile.
As for the post that brought this back up, I'm not too concerned about my children using it in an inappropriate setting. Even if they did, it's just very mild potty humor, it isn't going to harm anyone.
Most definitely! I can't change what's in my DNA. Although I have found that many men of all ages and from all walks of life still seem to find bathroom humor to be funny.

I also think the word butt is crass and I don’t use it. I saw bum. Have I used the word butt or even ass? Yes but not around my kids. I have heard the gymnastics teacher say ok sit on your butts everyone or heard others say butt around my kids. I cringe a bit and depending on who it is I might even say can you not say that. I also don’t like the words stupid, dumb, hate or ugly being said around them and those are pretty common words but just aren’t words that young children should be exposed to.
I realize everyone is different, some people say these words like they’re no big deal but a three and five year old don’t need to hear this. They will hear it in school, I know this. Maybe they already have but thankfully I haven’t heard them say these things.
The finger has not come up again either. No pun lol.
Eh, bum is just as crude as butt, plus most kids won't have heard it and have no idea what it means. If you want to use an inoffensive euphemism stick with bottom or backside. https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/bum

"Bum" (meaning "butt", not "lazy person") is a British term, like "prat" (moron). American kids won't know it, but British and maybe Canadian kids probably might.
Bum can be a not nice name for a person. But to call a behind a bum doesn’t seem crude to me. Bum bum is often what is said to babies.
You gotta call it something when all is said and done.
True. But every time I hear "bum" in reference to a human butt, I think of the infamous "Bum Bum Song" by Tom Green [NSFW]. He's Canadian, so I don't know if he used the word facetiously or not.
I'd probably call it "bottom" or "buttocks" if butt" is too crass.

Bum may be used that way elsewhere but in most of the US it's simply the equivalent of butt, no better, no worse. You can't clutch pearls over the use of one you without clutching pearls over the other.
Um yeah I can clutch pearls over whatever makes me uncomfortable. I personally think bum sounds way more innocent than butt. And ass is probably the worst thing it could be called.
