Knight Foundation awards 7 Philadelphia grants

"We were extremely impressed by the quality of ideas that came from Philadelphia," said Carol Coletta, Knight Foundation vice president for community and national initiatives. "It is clear that there are a lot of people in Philadelphia with good ideas who want to make their city better. We saw that in these applications."

Very cool-I worked for several years as a lifeguard at various city pools. It will be great to see them improve. Philly has a plethora of public libraries and pools-something we need to start taking more advantage of.

"Bryant's idea received a $297,000 grant from the Knight Foundation as a part of the first Knight Cities Challenge. His was one of seven winning projects in Philadelphia, more than any other city.

The 33-year-old urban planner discovered Philadelphia boasted more outdoor public pools per capita than any other city in the country.

Bryant's idea, the Pop-up Pool Project, secured the largest grant among the Philadelphia winners. Group Melvin Design, his employer, wants to add movable seating, shade, planters and programming like games or food-truck visits to the bare concrete decks at the city's pools."

I love that Immigrant Innovation Hub grant from the Knight Foundation. It's a good idea that we actively attract immigrants to maintain growth and increase diversity.

Philadelphia

1100 N. Delaware - 13 floors

Quote:
Developer Michael Samschick of Core Realty is proposing to build two new apartment buildings, at 1100 and 1212 N. Delaware Ave., housing a total of more than 200 residential units. Samschick is proposing a 136-foot-tall building at 1100 N. Delaware, and a 78-foot building at 1212. Both buildings would be wrapped in retail space on the ground floor, which Samschick said he hoped would attract pedestrian-oriented, neighborhood-serving uses like a pharmacy or dry cleaners.

In order to get the two buildings approved, Samschick will need a number of fairly minor variances for lot coverage, open area, the number of loading docks, floor area ratio, and setbacks on the roof deck at 1100 N. Delaware. That building is the bigger of the two; it would house 180 apartment units, office space and a rooftop pool.

My neighborhood one is being installed today. NW corner of Broad and Spring Garden.

I saw another one at the SE corner of 40th and Market.

No bikes yet.

Philly's bike share will be #1 in the country, agree? This city is more bikeable than DC, Chicago, and New York.
