But even before then, the guy was virtually an absentee governor who only seemed to show up when pandering to the energy lobby. I'm usually not one for raising taxes, but why is there no natural gas extraction tax in PA? Also, he made huge cuts to educational funding, which wasn't popular with many people.

The guy should just do the PA Republican Party a favor and disappear gracefully.
Well, this guy does seem like a bit of a douche, a big douche. I know politicians are sometimes bad people, but he takes it to another level.

Not Catholic but this would be very exciting, it would be great to see him in person. It would be yet another sign that Philly is on the up and up, and show that the city can handle huge events. First the Pope, next the Olympics!

he should invite the legislature to rome to see that the free purchase of wine doesn't end in civilization's end but that it is actually a desirable thing

If he comes he should publicly denounce Chaput and remove him from his position. Haven't been in the church for a very long time now but Pope Francis seems to represent everything that is good about Catholicism. Meanwhile Chaput is an anti-gay, anti-woman, bigot POS of the highest order.

This visit was originally scheduled by Pope Benedict. I'm doubting Pope Francis will come.
1. Within the first year of his papacy, he has yet to speak English in one of his General Audience's, or Sunday Angelus.
2. It's well known that Pope Francis isn't in the best of health.

It's an international event to be hosted by the city of Philadelphia (and the state of Pennsylvania by extension), and they wanted to include Pope Francis, who hadn't yet committed, so why not pay him a visit?

^^^ Seriously. It seems a rather shortsighted view to see the money spent on this trip as tax dollars "out the window" instead of money invested. The Pope's visit will fill even more hotel rooms across the region and bring worldwide attention to our city. That kind of opportunity to showcase the city in turn generates more visitors down the line and provides some nice marketing tools to the Chamber of Commerce.

I'm not Catholic but I recognize what a coup this is to Philly to be the first US city to host him. Seems it was worth a few plane tickets.

John Paul II, soon after her became Pope, came here back in the 70s. And, yes, it was huge. Probably a million people on the Parkway for Mass. An alter was built over Logan Circle.

The World Family Meeting 2015, is HUGE. Never been held in the US before and could attract a million visitors even without the Pope coming.

It will not only fill every hotel room in the region , most likely, but will probably need extra accommodations somehow. And it will be very interesting to see how we handle all of the people expected to show up regarding transportation and housing them all.
