Was there for school. I'm going back to Montreal--cheaper than Philly and totally different from Toronto (and much cheaper).

Um, the Canadian metropolis vs. US metropolis is a little perplexing to me.

I mean yea, I am envious of Canada having SAFE, CLEAN large cities (in comparison to US) but Canadians are different people with different histories so I try not to make that many comparisons.

I lived in philly for 3 years and visit there often. I am bemused by it cause I live in suburban DC now.

What can you say about the government. Although Mayor Nutter seems like just what the city needed. It would seem that the city doesn't have the racially polarizing politics of say Detroit at least.

There are nice places to live in the city with low crime, and most important places for commerce and toursim are safe.

The crime situation; look if all you do is sit inside and watch channel 6 action news then yea, you're gonna think that the place is crazy. Truth is, big city crime in large cities post 90s is hyperbolized with people still having certain examples fresh in their minds (LA's Rodney king riots, Philly's MOVE group confrontation, NYC subway killings of 70s). Seriously though, crime problems in Philly and other cities are serious but still exaggerated.

Most crime I hear of occurs in North Philly and parts of South and West Philly. Cleaning up those places will be a long drawn out process. If you want to be more passive about the problem then just avoid certain areas.

In a simple sense, the city is great for young singles and couples looking for city life. There are also many employment opportunities in the area and great colleges too.

So yea I love Philly, it's a fixer upper sure but people have got to stop talking like it's some rat infested hellhole.

Now CAMDEN on the other hand...

I love Philly. I'm a teenager who has skipped out multiple times to Philly and spent either the day or night there. The people are so open friendly...from cops to the rich businessmen with their bmw's and nice suits to the guys who look kind of sketchy, hollering at 12:30 to pretty women; if you get lost people are willing to give you their cells to help you get to where you wanna go.

I have to say i love philadelphia all of it i have been threw almost all the neighborhoods west philly southwest philly frankford nicetown center city. I am moving into the city this summer. As far as crime goes theres a certian way you have to reduce different crimes. Violent crimes you call the cops. Drug dealling will never stop but what you can do is get the drug dealers nervous enough that they are going it behind closed doors as they do in the new york area. In nyc most people that sell do it in there biulding or in the park but its secretive there usually clean cut kids playing basketball or just hanging out with a group of friends and none of them attempt to even threaten you i admit the cops need to be better in philadelphia but hey that makes it even better that im trying to be a police officer thats one more real cop on the streets your city has beauty it just needs a good cleaning invest in the house you have been living in for years its your house it really does affect the charecter of the neighborhood less people kill in the open air in center city then they do in the projects and simple things like that determine how likely a drug dealer is to want to sell on that block the more you lay down the more they come up

Default Scranbarre -

Yes. I do think there is hope in this city. I have a love hate relationship with Philly but there is no doubt that there is more possibility in this city than a lot of us seem to think. Sad thread indeed.

Letters to councilmen end up in the trash or seemingly "disappear", been reported on locally not too long ago.

The police right now are dealing with a different sort of focus, staying alive and responding to all sorts of major crimes in different ways under Ramsey.

Calls to violent crimes, domestic violence, and break ins go unanswered, or answered hours late to incorrect addresses. There's more to it than "call the cops".

Default Cannot be serious

Apples and Oranges from someone who lived in both.

Nice commercial for the Mayoral run. Hopefully before then, you'll visit the non touristy areas of this city. You'll see it's nothing and has never been anything like Scranton.

[quote=ScranBarre;349225]

The reason why I threw in the scenario about Scranton's Hill Section is because, in many ways, it was in a similar situation of neglect and crime in the 1980s-1990s as some of Philly's neighborhoods are today. After seeing the massive rebirth of that neighborhood, I just assumed that similar efforts undertaken by residents and officials alike in Philadelphia could have a similar impact on improving the quality-of-life for residents. I suppose nothing can be accomplished until you all start electing some true empathic leaders into power, not the positional ones who are only where they are today for the glory and to siphon money off of the taxpayers. Scranton has done that with Mayor Doherty (and hopefully myself in the future) and Police Chief Elliott, Wilkes-Barre has just rounded a corner with Mayor Leighton, and Philly can do the same once you all stop electing numbskulls into office!

A Hoagie is a deli sandwich. On an awesome torpedo steak roll. Other regions call their versions Sub sandwiches or "Hero" sandwich.
