Several other airlines also had the DC-10 30's with service to and from Phoenix Sky Harbor International. They included the Northwest DC-10s from Phoenix to Detroit, FEDEX and Western Airlines had them that they used on routes from LAX and other cities. They were the work horse of long haul routes and high density routes especialy in winter time in Phoenix for almost 30 years.

In the late fifties-early sixties, one of the tv stations had a late morning or early afternoon Saturday movie called Shock Theater. The feature would always be a funky science fiction or horror film. Before the movie began, a character would come on, try to make scary faces, and edge across the stage while he made gestures and body language as though he was intent on strangling someone the audience could not see. This was all done silently. Does anyone know who the actor was? Was he a local? Was Shock Theater a local presentation? We would not miss it week after week. At that time, we could not get enough horror and, especially, science fiction, so it seemed that the city stopped for Shock Theater. We would no more miss it than we would miss Twilight Zone or Science Fiction Theater. Our likes in these matters, I think, said everything about who we were, where we came from, and where we were going. As alchemy preceded chemistry, in our individual lives such interests preceded more serious interests in related areas. Who would have thought in those days that later we actually would send Americans to the Moon and bring them safely back, and that later still (2011) the space shuttle would have its very last flight, and that then American astronauts would have to hitch rides on the Soviet Soyuz to make it to space.

Vaguely remember that show. Couldn't find who the local host was. Did find this link:

Thanks for posting that video. - It's always good to see many of the classics, like the Boeing 727-200, and the 737-200. DHL still uses the 727-200, and once in a while I'll hear a loud aircraft leaving Sky Harbor at 7000 or 8000 feet after the climb-out, and you can definitely tell it's a 727 by its sound.

Encanto Park Kiddieland boat ride in 1955. I used to take my kid there, even had a birthday party once. Went to see Liberace at the shell, amazing they would hold a concert there. We sat on those tiered grass 'seats.' During the summer the Encanto pool was the best of all pools in Phoenix although I always worried I would be impaled by an arrow since the archery range was right next to it.

What I remember about Encanto were the trees... nothing like them in Scottsdale's El Dorado or Chapparal Parks.

OK smartty pants Google searchers - see if you can ID this former AZ politician - photographed in1932. The object in his hands should be a clue to those who know about his job prior to politicking.

The Joe G. picture looked very familiar; last year I was at an Italian restaurant on "The Hill" in St. Louis, and there it was on the wall of fame.

The B-ballplayer is not Charles Barkley.
