are you asking about this?

TOVREA CASTLE

it's not on 68th St., but is the only distinctive place "on a hill" in the area I can think of

No, that's not the house they are thinking of. It is just north of the Historical Society Museum.

Here you go:

I remember being fascinated by this house as a kid.

I have seen this house as well, it was built back in the 1930's. It is called the Eisendrath House and a pictue of it can be seen here:

The Tempe.gov website does have some good information about it.

I grew up in Peoria from 1970 until 1983 and remember an electric plant or something in Glendale that really lit up the night sky with all the lights on it. It seems like it was on 75th south of Grand Ave. Is it still there and was it an electric plant? Seems Like it was 75th and Northern .

His site is wonderful and its obvious he cares a lot about this history but its not the be-all and end-all of photographic history of the city of Phoenix.

I have a collection of Az Highways Magazine, for instance (400+ issues) going back to 1956 that have most of these same images in them. Nobody is trying to trick anyone into believing he or she found these photos by some sort of divine inspiration. A a sense of determination and willingness to spend the time on research is all it really takes to find this and much more.
Most of "my" collection was gathered long before the internet ever existed.
Many of us also have our own images we've taken over the years like this one I took of The Rossen House in 1973 before the restoration. Enjoy. And notice the lack of watermark plastered all over the image.

I fondly recall climbing to the higher levels of Camelback and other locales and being able to see the entire city..before the sprawl. Most certainly there were buildings outside of my binoculars..landmarks..enclaves.I still love Maricopa County and Phoenix.
