OLPH 1st St. and Brown

OLPH started at 1st and Brown. OLPH has on their web site a page about the old adobe mission (http://olphaz.com/old_adobe_mission.htm - broken link) (see link, some good historic pictures on a sub-link on the page). The main church moved to Miller at the northest corner of 2nd in the mid 50s, with Rev. Eugene Maguire as the pastor for a long time. I was baptized there (by Father Maguire), first communion (same), confession, confirmation (Bishop McCarthy, 1973) as well. In the late 70s the new and current church was built on the north part of the property, my sister was married in that church; the old church served as a parish hall. My maternal grandparents from Chicago would stay at the Scottsdale Apartments just across 2nd Street during their extended visits.

As for Chew, I remember something about The Basket House, now Mexican Imports, at the corner of Brown and Main as having "Chew" in the name, as in "Chew's Basket House"; that would be a block north of the old OLPH.

Yes, the Basket House, then Mexican Imports, was run by the Chews. My mom and my aunt had a small clothing store on Main, just down the way from that store... I was in there a lot.

So, that's Brown Ave, looking south from Indian School, I suppose.

Guessing the SHS ref to Scottsdale High wasn't too far off the mark.

Right, SHS would be just across Indian School, behind the photographer in the 1948 shot. It was built in 1923, and closed 60 years later, in 1983.

Here are two more links, one has interesting photos. One of those pics involves the tornado of 1968 which tore up the school a bit. I don't remember much about it since it was summer and CCD only ran during the school year. The damage was cordoned off.

I've been reading more of the old posts in this thread and notice there has been some discussion of specific famous crimes committed in the area. I was wondering if anyone here might recall an incident which would have occurred around 1970 give or take a year or so. I'm uncertain as to the exact events, but as I understand it a police officer went missing without a trace and was never found. Even though a body was never recovered there was a man placed on trial for his murder who was either acquitted of the crime or whose conviction was overturned. I believe the suspect's last name was Reis and he had been the subject of an investigative report in the Gazette newspaper where he was uncovered as having been using a fake marraige counseling business as a cover up for organized criminal activity. I'm not certain if the newspaper report came before or after his implication in the supposed murder.

I have been unable to find any information on the internet about it and thought someone here may recall something as it was supposedly a rather big deal at the time. I once knew someone related to the accused who told me the story but they have since unfortunately passed away.

I do not know about this crime, but I do remember in the mid 60's there was a murder at the Kon TuKi hotel on Van Buern. I lived only a few blocks from it and my brother had a job there as a diswasher.

In 78 there was a murder in an apartment in Scottsdale. Bob Craine from Hogan's Hero was murdered. He was involved in prono and other sleezy deals. In about 91 nine monks from a Budhist Temple were murdered as well. I remember that being my husband who works for the medical examiner worked on those cases in his first six months on the job.
