I thought Phx had annexed Anthem buy now and would be 650 sq miles? if i remember right.....I guess they have not annex Anthem yet.

We have done that road many times. It's boring. For me the most boring part is from the border of Arizona to Las Cruzes. We always did Phoenix to Ft Stockton the first day, and Ft Stockton to Houston the second day. Coming from Phoenix there is only one check point just before Van Horn. No big deal. Stay on I-10 all the way, it's the fastest. Stay also on I-10 to go through San Antonio, it's faster than taking the Loop. If you leave Ft Stockton early in the morning (around 8 am) you can be in Houston around 3 or 4 pm. And yes there is about 1-1/2 to 2 hours drive from Houston to Galveston. I recommend to exit I-10 at the Belt way (attention the Belt Way is a toll road). Exit the Belt Way on I-45 ; I-45 will take you straight to Galveston. If you don't want to pay for the toll road, you can exit I-10 at Texas 6 and take Texas 6, but it will be a longer drive, this is not a freeway. And don't forget, Texas is 1 hour ahead of us during this time of year (2 in summer).

To eliminate the bickering over what Hill country is, I will set it straight. From a 3rd party here, I am partially Texan, as I have been living in "Hill Country" since may 2005, and own a house there. You cannot pass though Hill Country driving on I10. Simple answer. There may be some slight hills along the way, but you are not in Hill Country. Central Texas is Hill Country. Austin and surrounding area for a couple hundred miles. Austin was built right in the middle of it. IMO the best view is in Marble Falls and around Lake LBJ. Texans do refer to where they are from as Hill Country. They do say, "I live in Hill Country," as if Texas were its own country and each portion of Texas is its own State. (Which allot of die hard Texans will refer Texas as "The Republic of Texas.")

It is the larger city. I have driven the Houston to Galveston route many times for the same reason you are and it's about 53 miles away, but as mentioned, it could take you close to 2 hours ( I have done it in shorter time) depending on the traffic.

We are going to stay 1 night in either Houston and drive to the port, or stay right in Galvelston.
If your cruise leaves in the afternoon, you would be fine staying in Houston and driving to Galveston the next day. The city of Galveston itself is fun to visit also.

No, Phoenix hasn't annexed Anthem and there are no new plans to do so. In the new general plan released after the new year, it isn't in the works. I think Anthem wants to be its own community and the city has no problem with that. Anthem is still miles from the city limit on I-17.

Also, Houston did shock me because it is 500+ sq miles of development. Mostly cookie cutter. There's parks here and there but I expected something like Phoenix where hundreds of square miles were set aside as un-developable (is that a word LOL) as public land, parks, and preserves but that's not the case in Houston.

Let us know how long it actually took you if you don't mind (to the OP). I might be making a drive to New Orleans so I'd be interested in knowing what it was like for someone this year. I'll be picking up friends in Tucson, Las Cruces, El Paso, San An so I might make it a driving adventure.

That's because the zip code is served by the post office in Phoenix. You can label it Anthem, AZ and it will still get there. That's how I send Christmas cards to family there and how they've given me their address. It's just like the Phoenician Resort (in Phoenix, but hey use their Scottsdale address since the post office servicing them is in Scottsdale); however, it is not a part of Phoenix nor does the City of Phoenix collect tax from that community.

Makes sense, but I often here Anthem refered to as North Phoenix. So is that unoffical or what?

Yeah that's weird, I always thought it was on the fringes of Phoenix proper.

It is completely wrong...The city limits aren't very "close" to Anthem. I think most of that is due to new residents who aren't too aware. I think Anthem is 10-12 miles north of the city limits.
