Branding! What could possibly be wrong with attaching a word to the city that has already been used as a pun to disparage it through the ages! p.s. wahhhhhhh p.p.s. you have a weird definition of "native".

"Twin Cities" is the common nickname, and in more distant areas still within their orbit, they are simply referred to as the "cities". That's how my parents grew up referring to them.

MSP is the airport code and is sometimes used as a shorthand for the area. I've seen it much more than the "MLSP" you claim is its "brand". In fact, I've never seen it used at all.

Although some would dispute the use of Wikipedia as a source, it is used and updated often enough and by a large enough group of people that I think it's fair to say that the mere existence of an article about a term implies that the term is commonly used.

I have entered the following search terms and here are the results (I'll leave out anything that does not refer to the city or area in question such as "Preimplantation Genetic Haplotyping")

PGH

A common abbreviation for Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States
The code for Union Station (Pittsburgh)

PIT

Entering this search term takes you straight to the article on Pittsburgh International Airport

MSP

Minneapolis–Saint Paul, the twin cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul and the surrounding area — the most highly populated area in Minnesota, USA
Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport, IATA airport code
Midway (Amtrak station), in St. Paul, Minnesota, United States

MLSP

Did you mean: MLS

MPLS

Entering this search term takes you straight to the article on Multiprotocol Label Switching

Mpls

Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States
Multiprotocol Label Switching, a data-carrying mechanism in computer networking

Note it refers to Minneapolis, NOT the Twin Cities as a whole. Mpls is essentially the equivalent to Penna.

Oops my image didn't work, here's a link: http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/The_Pitt_(add-on

Seriously I am being silly because thus argument is silly and I sort of feel sorry for you for taking it so deadly seriously.

No, keep it PGH. It might actually remind the illiterates in the rest of the country that there's an 'H' at the end of 'PittsburgH.'

Setting aside the question of the validity of marketing with abbreviation (which is apparently what you have done), how can you market positively when it spells the word "pit"?

The best way to add the whipped cream and cherry atop the "hip abbreviation sundae" is to (1) take out every capital letter and (2) finish it off with a period. See, e.g., "pitt.".

I think "pitt." is a little too 90s rock bandish: "moe.", ".moneen.", etc.

Same breath you can ask. how can you market any city positively that's named PITTSburgh? still doesn't dismiss the fact that PIT used more universally as abbrv for Pittsburgh than PGH is.
