There was another story about a year ago where a baby boy in a stroller was left in the living room with the family pit bull. The pit bull attacked the boy ripping his genitalia off.
I would have no problem giving these parents 30 years behind bars!

So sad!

And in a separate attack on Monday, a 5 yr. old Florida boy was attacked by a pit bull who then was shot after charging at police officers.

I know that even if 10 children were fatally attacked by pit bulls in Florida on the same day, there are those people who would continue to say, "It's all about how you raise them."

Yet, as the number of children severely wounded or killed by this particular breed continues to rise, those words sound more hollow.
Perhaps they were wrong.

There are many breeds of dogs and I guess I do not understand why someone would choose a pit bull, given thier history.

Dogs are wolves, and as such can just snap for any reason. Sure, a basset hound isn't likely to kill someone, but its possible.

Pitbulls are just a more dangerous breed. Its not the breed itself, its the owners who didn't train the dog properly.
This is so true Memphis. I had two pits. They are loving animals. I've never had a problem with my dogs. One died and I replaced it with another pitbull.

It's the owner of any dog. My stepson was attacked by a chow once. The dog had attacked several children is the past. The dog was put down.

Pitbulls are stylish and the new thing to buy. You have so many people raising these animals searching for the aggressive quality and to attack. It's the owner's fault. Maybe those dogs should be put down after attacking, but the owner should be charged as well.

When I had mine, it wasn't too much talk and news about the breed.

That is a ridiculous list. Malamutes are not aggressive and Golden Retrievers??? A Great Pyranees generally won't take food out of your hand when you offer it to them, you have to place it on the floor before they'll take it. Some of the dogs on that list are pathetic as watchdogs because they're so friendly to everyone.

Strawman argument, thus worthless as a debating point. A dog doesn't have the reasoning power of a human being and thus cannot be held responsible for its own actions.

How many dog attacks are actually documented? Only the ones in which someone is seriously hurt or killed. Not if the dog kills another dog, cat, etc. Plus, some states have very strict dog bite laws yet most don't. I find it interesting that so many responses are all about attacking a breed, yet who is putting the blame where it really needs to be directed? To the irresponsible parents. If someone had found the baby unattended, they would be charged with neglect yet the dog killing their baby appears to have saved them from that.

Dogs are not babysitters!!!
Not all dogs are intelligent enough to know what a baby is or that it's a member of the family. The pit bull probably thought the baby was a piece of meat or even an intruder. And some male dogs will kill puppies for some reason. Especially unneutered male dogs and they say most killer dogs are unneutered males.

That's true. I'd rather see laws requiring spay/neutering than breed specific bans that don't work. That alone would solve many problems in addition to pet overpopulation.

Because "random mutt kills toddler" isn't as sensational.

The fact of the matter is that you are about as likely to be killed by lightening as a dog. Not just a pitbull, but any dog period. These unimaginative posters are creating a phony crisis.

I got a kick out of that list too. Pugs and Fox Terriers are on the list as well.

Did the kid provoke the dog? Just a question... It's very sad a child lost his life, but why weren't the parents supervising the child with the dog? I have a 5 year old JRT and a 4 year old son. My dog, Dusty, can be grumpy at times and snap at me, my son, sister, etc. if he feels threatened and/or bothered. My dog is the most loving animal - he sits in your lap, constantly licks, likes to play, etc. but as a RESPONSIBLE parent, I always supervise my child when he's around my dog. Dogs are animals, not people. They don't understand things as we humans do.
