How you define "need" is irrelevant; it's none of your business to tell others what sort of guns they may own.
And define "military type" weapons: does that include the 1911? The 1903 Springfield? The SKS? The K98 Mauser? The flintlock musket? The Colt Navy revolver?
It seems apparent that the OP does not even know enough about firearms to recognize that a shotgun is a military weapon. Shhhhhhhhh........
All joking aside, the question is unanswerable. If you want to defend your home with a firearm, the type and model is close to irrelevant, beyond the simple concept: One that enables you to hit your target under high stress.
And that is 95% training and preparation, 5% weapons choice.
But you don't think people should own military weapons....
Seems logical to me, what for ???
