Well, I use therapy here and there when I have issues I can't deal with by myself, like how to get from here to there in my life. I don't and won't see an "addictions" counselor, or anyone who has a lot of addicts as clients. My problem is living, not alcohol/drugs.
I was such a party girl that I started my recovery in NA because it was much more social, once I felt comfortable in my sobriety, I moved over to AA.
I do move around the world with my job every now and then. It's nice to move into a new continent, country, town and have a support group to start out with. I find sober people with whom I share interests in much less time than most people. It's really very convenient.
Now, I hardly ever go, but know that there's always a meeting somewhere if I need one.
That's pretty much what my friend says, that it is helpful to know that the meetings were there if she felt she needed to go. I think it's been about 25 years for her now.
I have no interest.
I've checked out other programs, I'm comfortable with AA.
I find meetings all over the world, sometimes in the strangest places.
But you said you'd rather spend a lot of money than to sit through a meeting.
What does it matter what other programs are out there if you're not going to go anyway, because you want to spend money and get drugs to take care of your problems.
I just don't get it.
You are correct. I'd rather not check my brain at the door.

We get that, you've said several times that you'd prefer drugs.
Drugs and recovery don't really go hand in hand.
YMMV.
In AA, I learned how to listen to people, identify with them and find some kernel of understanding of myself.
It's a rare meeting where I don't get some bit of self-knowledge or understanding.
I find meetings valuable.
I learn skills in the rooms that I carry out into my life, usually with great success.
I went from being unemployable when I hit my bottom and starting my recovery to being actively recruited to work in places where my skills are needed.
I earn good money, travel the world, have lots of friends, am financially secure... what more could I ask for?
Really, nothing.

No, what I meant to say is you have to check any critical thinking at the door, and I am not willing to do that. I mean, even forget any prescribed psychotropics, I will STILL not check my brain at the door!

I'm a success story, and I owe it to AA.
Yeah, you sound like one of the 5% for whom AA was quite the success and good fortune to you! And I mean that sincerely.
Likewise, there are the unfortunates that need more help and just are not getting the resources they need.
Somehow I have the feeling that no such exclusive list actually exists though
We we see how long she can lasts......
Of course, we can't factor in the med levels.
