A balanced budget amendment would require people with a balanced brain, not extremists. It would require a focus on accountability, on the ability to respect and balance both revenues and spending, not one or the other. It would require that revenues and spending be tied to the state of the economy. For example, policies devised to ensure that tax receipts are at least 18% of the GDP (the average over the decades), and specific spending programs no more than a set percentage of the GDP (for example, about 4% of the GDP on military spending). Only then there would be less politics and more a task for those in the government to ensure the general welfare of the nation and its people who they are meant to represent.

Along with taxing passive income at a much higher rate and possibly installing a fair tariff for imported goods and tax penalties for exporting work, we'd have the deficit reduced at a much quicker clip.

Better call the man himself with these ideas.....it's really what the American people want!

Finally he is paying attention to the election of Novemeber 2010. This is what we voted for... drastic cuts to get our fiscal house in order. We did not vote for compromise and reaching across the aisle. It's too late for that. This is a very serious debt crisis. If he backs down we need to replace the entire GOP with a truly conservative party that will make bold cuts and not play nice-nice games with the Dems.

Not a threat. It's reality. And with unemployment at an 8 month high, I think we can all agree that the child in the WH is in over his head. Time to take the credit card away from the teenagers, and deal with our situation.

Nice civility - can't make an intelligent argument, but gotta include childish personal attacks.

I agree, Mr. Boehner needs to tax passive income at a higher rate for more revenue to fund the federal government and gut military expenditures along with fair tariffs for imported good, and last but not least, penalize those businesses for exporting jobs out of the country. That should reduce the deficit in no time....not even in one generation. (20 years = generation)

One more thing while we're at it, eliminate subsidies for agri-businesses! Think of the small farmer...it's what the American people want. A fair start to get their foot in the game call mono....uh...capitalism.

I'm fine with him trying to enact the cuts. But at the end of the day, there is no question that the debt ceiling must and will be raised unless we want to face a massive flight from US treasury securities, significant spikes in interest rates, and likely another ugly recession. This is like playing chicken with a freight train, and every reasonably trained finance and economics professional in the US and around the world knows this.

If this plays out bad for Mr. Boehner, it will be an albatross of epic proportions around his political neck along with his sludgin' cesspool sailor buddies.

Mr. Boehner, the American people want you to commit political suicide. We know you don't know your arse from a hole in the ground.

The American people beg you....

I guess this post represents your idea of an intelligent argument. Why, you can't handle the challenge to see Boehner act on his "threat"?

I apologize to have hurt your personal feelings by mentioning Boehner and his propensity to roll tears down his cheeks.

I'll withhold judgement till I see where these "trillions" in cuts are coming from. NPR, NEA and Planned Parenthood won't get us there. There has to be a commitment to real reform-- Including military, social security and (shudder) Medicare. Yes, I am a liberal.

Nothing wrong for a grown man to cry. It shows he has real emotions. Not like the fake dems who use emotions on just about every issue,IE, It is for the children, throw the old people under the bus, old folks will be eating dog food, etc. etc., etc.
