Most people, whether wealthy or not, would agree that the woman and her son that you use as example should be protected. However, there are many people that should not be. For example, I don't think that someone who is poor because they have an addiction problem should be taken care of. They made the choice that led them to this situation, and the rest of us should not have to pay for it. Also, if someone keeps having children that they can't pay for should the rest of us keep paying? The sad thing is, despite the belief of some in this thread, the government cannot keep on supporting so many forever. We will never get out of debt, if we try to keep paying. Eventually, the goal of everyone should be to become self-sufficient.
I'm not envious of the wealthy because I'm trying to get to where they are.
From what I can see and hear in my everyday conversations, people are not angry with the wealthy. They get angry when the wealthy gain is by immoral.
The wealthy needs the poor. Most millionaires get their wealth of the backs of the poor.
I don't hate, period. I dislike someone advancing themselves at the expense of other, as Madoff did. There are thousands of cases of others taking that same approach to success, those are the ppl I have a problem with. Ppl that work hard, make the right moves, and find wealth along the way, should be respected and more ppl should emulate their methods.
Someone that screws over ppl in every deal and leaves victims in their wake... Not so much. While my wife owes much of her success and wealth to Sohio, I don't see John D Rockefeller as a person to emulate. He was ruthless and screwed everyone in his path. You might admire the tremendous success and wealth he accumulated, but having studied him, I'll pass.

Really? Do tell, why is that wrong? Have you ever watched how elephants relate to each other? More caring of family members than a lot of humans I know. The psychology of a herd mentality, making a group dependent upon a food source, applies to trying to domesticate a wild animal just as "naturally" as making people dependent upon the government. Animals may not be as happy locked up in a zoo as they would be out in the wild and free, but they get fed and receive veterinary care, don't they? The difference is humans CHOOSE to become dependent. The animals in the zoo did not have a choice.
