Santa Monica, California (CNN) -- A California state legislator is proposing to ban the captivity of killer whales for entertainment at SeaWorld in the wake of CNN's controversial documentary "Blackfish."
"It is time that we embrace that the long-accepted practice of keeping orcas captive for human amusement must end," state Assemblyman Richard Bloom, a Democrat from Santa Monica, said at a press conference Friday at the city's oceanfront pier.

Good. Whales are intelligent and amazing creatures that should not be confined and put on display for their tricks. I think Sea World should be shut down.
Don't know enough about these creatures to speak definitively on it, but i'm not big on animals in captivity. Hell, i wouldn't wanna be in an enclosure either.

Sea World did fine with only porpoises for decades. Porpoises learn faster than whales, and aren't the apex predators Orcas are. Sea World was built for the porpoise, not the whale. I don't have any problem with Sea World going back to the past, but the sooner they get rid of their whales, the better off they will be.
Unfortunately, almost all of those whales won't live long if freed. But some may, and we have to accept that some bad mistakes have bad consequences. Sea World got greedy and lucky; if Shamu had not been as docile as he was, all the rest of the Orcas that were captured would have never been trapped in the first place.
They are using predators. Once in a while, a caged tiger is docile for all his life, but they are always the rare exceptions. Orcas and porpoises are no different, and they can never be counted on to be docile or kind to humans. We don't let our kids pat tigers, do we? Why then, does Sea World let a little kid pat a porpoise, who can snap an arm off just as quickly as a tiger?
Orcas are jerks. People make the case that they are intelligent and gentle, but they really are killer "whales". They kill trainers. They also kill bigger, more intelligent whales just to eat out their tongue. They kill the baby whales by drowning them.

So they shouldn't be held in captivity right. That's what Sea World is doing. And it's wrong. They are tying to force these whales to do tricks for their audience. Whales should not be kept in small containers where they cannot swim. What do you expect from them. They want to be free.

We put killers in jail. Why not put killer whales in cages where they can't hurt other whales and people? At least they can make themselves useful there.
