I know, what do all those people complaining about overpopulation think would happen if we took their advice about zero population growth? Eventually we would die out as a species. Look at all the countries that are having troubles because the birth rate is too low.
European countries that rely on several workers for every pensioner had to open their countries up to immigration and now it's destroying their centuries-old cultures.
Japan has the lowest birth rate in the world, and it is estimated that by 2060 the population will decrease from about 127 million to about 87 million, and of that population 40% will be 65 or older. They could become a ghost country unless they do something they've long fought against - mass immigration.
Russia is so worried about declining birth rates that they outlawed homosexuality and are encouraging marriage. I'm not sure what their stance is on abortion at this time, but I do remember a few years ago seeing a report about the number of abortions women in Russia have. It was common for a woman to have not one but three, four, five, etc. I wouldn't be surprised to hear that Russia has outlawed abortion.
But maybe we need to do die out and let the earth be reborn. We are just killing it and the people.
The purpose of inheritance tax is to maintain some sort of reasonable balance between those fortunate enough to be born into money versus not.
There is no reasonable balance between those fortunate enough to be born into money versus not. The inheritance tax is inherently unreasonable.
If you earn money, then you already paid your taxes on it and have the right to do what you want with what's left. It isn't the government's place to step in and say it isn't "fair" of you to give that money to your heirs. That's legislating morality and is no more justified than banning gay marriage.
That's why low skilled workers need to increase their skills. It's not rocket science.
It is for many. America has to create conditions for employment at ALL levels. Otherwise it will cost us more in many ways. Keeping high employment rates is vital for our future, regardless of technological progress.

??? Relative sits on $1 million unrealized capital gain with tax basis of $10K. Relative dies and I inherit $1 million with stepped-up basis of $1 million. Taxes were paid on $10K Taxes were not paid on $990K.
Not all low skilled people can increase their skills. Besides, if everyone increased their skills, you'd have a lot of highly skilled unemployed people.
You mean like we have now?
Which is better - a lot of low-skilled unemployed people, or a lot of highly skilled unemployed people?
Idea, maybe we can train people for jobs that need to be performed, you know like maintaining all that wonderful automated equipment. Come on people every new technology brings new jobs with it meaning many low skilled workers can be trained into skilled jobs and while serving a purpose they also improve their own lot on life and ends the cycle of assistance for some and their families.
A PC phrase for TANF with no end date.
So government welfare is your answer to our future.
And who is going to pay for this basic income ?
The rich or the corporates ? They are already fleeing the country and making their homes somewhere else.
