Why have so many first and second generation Asians who moved here with practically nothing, sometimes not even language skills, been so successful?
Possibly work ethic......I don't think their culture believes in welfare. Plus they seem to be very family involved when it comes to running the business.
The OP is making a racial insinuation. He/she conveniently forgets that the so called welfare dependent "red states" on his map that happen to not be all red states but rather the heavily mixed southern states. So, yes, there seems to be a racial component to the data but, miraculously, when we get to Nebraska, the Dakotas, etc, his insinuation no longer fits. Unsuccessful troll was not quite successful.
Criticism of red states always focuses entirely on the struggling states in the South and ignores the red states like NE, SD, ND, UT, WY that are successful. Acknowledging that red states outside of the South rank highly in a wide range of socioeconomic metrics completely destroys their argument.

Because the most motivated and often highly educated came here for various reasons. Also, many of them came here AFTER the civil rights movement.
Basically, once your family is in the crapper in terms of dad not being around, low expectations, poverty and all that comes with it.....it's a whole lot tougher to climb out than when you start from a solid family base with education, high expectations etc.

Glad that you acknowledged the cultural aspect of it.

It's generational poverty culture here in America, nothing to do with pigmentation.
The reasons Asians, Indians etc. have done so well is because they are in most cases top tier people that beat out many many others to come here and work, study etc. I have two different friends that have done that and they are so far above the average chinese person it's not funny. No wonder their kid will grow to be a big success here given they are being raised in a high-acheiving academic household.
To everyone here that posts this kind of thread: I will make you a deal. I, as a conservative Republican promise that I will never accept Medicare, Medicade, or Social Security in exchange for leally never needing to pay the portion of my income taxes that support those programs and for the return of any FICA withheld in y name since I began to work.
BradPiff, Mississippi hopes to reach 3rd world status, someday. That would be progress.
This has to be one of the dumbest posts ever on CD, and that is saying something. Median income in MS is about $36,000. Granted it is dead last among US states, but it is far ahead of 3rd world status. Median income worldwide is $10,000.
Take a 3rd world country like Kenya, which is a great country and home of the current world marathon record holder. The per capita income is about 1,700 per year in Kenya.

I'm not talking about the ones who received work and study visas to come here, I'm talking about the refugees.
