False.

SillwaterTownie"Poor red state residents are poor because issues closest to their hearts are to ban abortion, be against homosexuals and protect the right to have a gun."

Correct, because the issue they devalue is education. It does not matter to them, and that omission = economic genocide for their offspring.

Everyone knows you live longer in the southern states, where life is simple.
I could strokeout, thinking about the rat race in NYC, Chicago, or LA.

Northern states are just as rural as southern states. A case can be made that they're even more rural.

Life is just as simple everywhere else as it is in the South.

Has it been mentioned this map includes nearly every government program including SS, medicare and veterans benefits? A rural county with a huge amount of retirees collecting SS would be in red but that's hardly welfare.

Quote:
Retirement and disability insurance benefits: Consist of old-age, survivors, and disability (OASDI) benefits; railroad retirement and disability benefits; Federal and State workers' compensation; temporary disability benefits; black lung benefits; and Pension Benefit Guaranty benefits.
The black lung benefit is paid with a tax on current mining operations, this is not welfare. Are any of them listed here welfare?

If you look further down the list you'll find welfare benefits but that is in addition to the others.

Yes, it's been pointed out.

The article even goes into some explanation of why those 50%+ counties rate so high - it's because of disability claims.

It's up to the reader to figure out how many are fraudulent. IME having spent 20+ years in that area, the answer is probably damn near all of them. Disability fraud is a way of life in Appalachia. Pick up the phone book - both covers are completely blanketed in disability lawyer ads. Jobs leave, disability fraud comes in.

True and most of those states are not heavily populated so % mean very little. I think we can all agree, the very small rural regions of states (yes, many are red) have very little opportunity for jobs, so there is a heavier dependance on welfare, but more than that, like you said it is the inner cities with the higest number of people receiving government assistance. When we people stop depending on these maps to get the whole story? Anyone who simply looks at a map or hears numbers and doesn't research closer isn't understanding the whole situation.
