When Obama shut the coal mines down all the jobs left and there is nothing there anymore.
There's many reasons why most of rural America is doing poorly. The vast majority of it has to do with cheap lending, taxes, regulations, and imposed costs.
Not sure it's exclusive to either red or blue states - I'm in a blue state (California) and we have hundreds of thousands of people here on welfare. I'm on UI benefits myself.

Your employer at least funded it before you started collecting.
Until Congress decided to throw more money at it, that is.

When did Obama shut the coal mines down?
These people have been living off the government dole for decades. Mining started heading out and downsizing in the 1960s in Appalachia. Obama wasn't even born when the industry started collapsing. In fact, the only time in recent memory when it's shown any signs of life at all was when Obama first took office and at least in WV, mining employment briefly ticked up.
And even if he did shut down the mines (which is both an insanely stupid thing to say and also completely and totally wrong), why does that justify rampant disability fraud?
The big empty areas of Nevada are controlled by the Federal Government. Nevada has control of only 16% of the area within its borders.
What am I wrong about? Just because the feds control it doesn't meant there are no towns. Jordan Valley to Winnemucca does have some life, even small towns. Along with Indian Reservations most of the way. This is why they're yellow, no handouts are given to the government. Also, there is not a large population of Paiutes there, to receive handouts.

Lemme guess...Conservative Republican?
Some people will twist and contort and say whatever nonsensical thing it takes to allow them to hold fast to their belief that black people are ruining everything, even though the data clearly show that white people in rural America are right there at the trough with their fake disability claims.

As usual, you have no idea what you're talking about.
I actually grew up in Appalachia, and the reason it's doing so exceptionally poorly doesn't have anything to do with cheap lending, taxes, regulations, or imposed costs. In fact the coal industry there was basically allowed to do whatever it wanted for decades. The fallout from the Buffalo Creek disaster that killed 125 people, injured 1100, and left 4000 homeless was a paltry $1 million dollar settlement entered into by a corrupt governor on his way out the door. It wasn't even enough to cover the clean up. That same governor eventually wound up in federal prison on unrelated matters.
If you want to know why that area is a failure, look at the culture. Hard work is not encouraged. Learning is not encouraged. It's a race to see who can get their disability claim granted first. There has been essentially no effort at all to improve the local economy. Now people are content to hang out in their trailers popping oxycontin and hoarding guns and four wheelers.
Why would any business want to move into a place with an unmotivated, uneducated workforce who will file a disability claim the second they see an opportunity?

Substitute meth for oxycontin and much of the rural Southeast is explained accurately.
