What the writer of this article doesn't understand is that responding in kind is a counterproductive way to stand up for one's rights to be treated as a human being deserving respect. That makes you no different than the people who are bothering you and it's difficult to gain respect in that manner. Also, as we learned in the Trayvon Martin case, it can lead to unintended consequences.
Expecting Black people to act in a dignified manner in response to those who have no manners isn't prejudice or demanding that Black people bow down to self-superior white people. It's what all well-respected people expect of each other. And it's the path to respect from others - rising above.
People with self-respect don't go to every fight they're invited to. That's allowing someone else to control your emotions and behavior.
How did the people in the car know he wasn't just a rude and impatient man who would have treated anyone in front of him identically? Maybe it wasn't about slavery at all.

I find it interesting that the OP had to make their personal story about race. Once they mentioned Florida a state I lived in and saw a lot of angry people(a lot of them older), mostly northern transplants.
I have seen this kind of behavior in banks, at the post office, someone getting impatient and throwing a fit, when in reality they're not late getting to work, the most likely have nowhere to actually be, they're just angry in general.
I would bet money if the car was a bunch of white teens the same scenario would have played out as well. You were taking too long ordering due to the number of people you had in the car and he got unreasonably angry, race had nothing to do with this situation.
This is what no one is talking about. But now, maybe we can.

That's it in a nut shell.
It really disgusts me that I have to "spread reputation around" before giving more to you. Every time I try, the system declines to give you the credit.
Lets be realistic about this. I have lived in major cities all across the country and being a white male I have been threatened by blacks over nothing except the color of my skin. It has happened enough that I know I have been the victim or racism. But at the same time I have met many blacks that I liked and got along with. So those experiences did not make me a racists. But this racism stuff is a 2 way street. Can happen to any race by any other race and sometimes by your own race.
Black on black crime being ignored is the real tragedy.
Black on black crime... why do we not talk about the real tragedy of white on white crime (he says somewhat facetiously).
Whites are killed by whites, blacks are killed by blacks, just like husbands kill wives and wives kill wives, friends kill friends.
It is just crime! Needless, and senseless crime.
America black, white and whatever has a violence problem, that is the tragedy.
