Student loans got nationalized in 2009. Bush had nothing to do with nationalizing the student loan industry. This was 100% Obama.
This is midway through 2015. You think 6.5 years isn't long enough to see the effects ?
Student loan debt skyrocketed since it was nationalized. The USG is handing out money like it's candy to kids wanting to go to college. The government is actually part of the problem of rising student loan debt.
Student loan debt was about $23K in 2007 and it's now about $29K in 2015.
Total student loan debt is now $1.6 TRILLION dollars.
That is largely due to tuition increases, I don't think Obama controls that- does he? What Obama did was take loans out of the hands of private lenders who were charging above market rates to college kids for loans that were guaranteed by the government and can't be discharged in bankruptcy, how could even the most staunch conservative have an issue with that?
Neither. You are a republican go back to sleep and don't worry about it. Its over most people's heads. Why doesn't the GOP get together a commission or delegation and make a trip to Germany or Finland and see how it works in real life.
Talk about the pot calling the kettle black. We are already over $18 trillion in fiscal operating debt with $100 trillion in unfunded liabilities. We'd need to completely restructure all of our entitlement programs, cut the waste fraud and abuse, and reform our federal tax system. It's not just as simple as giving away more crap for free.
Every time the government gets involved in the free market system, by giving away financial assistance, costs go up, up, and up. Look at education from K-12 to college, and our health care system, the more money government tosses out there to spread the wealth around, the more costs go up.
We would see new car prices soar if government started to hand out free financial assistance vouchers for lower income people to buy a new car.

Just put the federal government in charge of everything, "how could even the most staunch conservative have an issue with that?"
What is there that the dems would not be in favor of the feds taking over? K-12 and college education, health care, agriculture, energy production, automobile manufacturing, giving out loans, the internet, controlling our local police forces, etc...
Oh, I forgot to add, the federal government dictating to employers what a minimum wage is worth to them for any job, of anyone, with any level of skill or competence who comes in off the street.
Seriously, is there anything the likes of 0bama would not think can be solved by the federal government taking over control of, or subsidizing? Seriously, anything?
government's job is to create a framework of laws and regulations for the free market to operate within.
It's not government's job to utterly fail to properly regulate something, like student loans, and then jump in to take it over.
The same way that university is extremely cheap or free in Western Europe (except the UK)
The same way that Western Europe, bar the UK, funds their higher education
College tuition is among the cheapest, if not the cheapest, in the developed world in Germany. Their unemployment rate is under 5%. Stop being such a narrow-minded, think-inside-the-box American
you didn't answer the question. HOW do they fund it?

Until recently, Germany had mandatory military service also. Should we adopt that too?
I am in favor of this but only if the number of college admissions do not increase as a result.
Level the playing field to where the only things that matter as to who receives a college education are intelligence, SAT (or ACT) scores, high school performance, and admissions essays and interviews -- and NOT not the ability to pay and who Mommy and Daddy are or were.
That's the way it's done in the European countries that people hold up as a model, but it won't fly here. And you know why.
