You are aware that slaves had no free will to object, right? Good grief. That's about the stupidest thing I've read here on C-D, and that puts you at the top of a very long list. Unbelievable.

Southerners, more than anyone, joined the Union Army after the Civil War.

Southerners just want to be on the winning side.

They're desperate for dignity.

And, don't they make the finest officers?

Good question.

You should ask the 'liberal' Governor of South Carolina, Nikki Haley. Also ask the 'liberal' South Carolina Senators Tim Scott and Lindsay Graham.

Don't forget to ask the 'liberal' Governor of Alabama, the 'liberal' Speaker of the Mississippi state House, and the 'liberal' Governor of Georgia.

Also, you should query 'liberal' Mitt Romney.

Not to mention 2016 Republican candidates for President such as 'liberal' Jeb Bush, 'liberal' Scott Walker, 'liberal' Rand Paul, 'liberal' Marco Rubio, and 'liberal' Republican Party chairman Reince Priebus.

What do all of the above have in common? They've all called for the removal of Confederate flags from public grounds.

Because here in the real world, it isn't liberals who have done a sudden 180-degree flip, it's conservatives who have put their fingers in the political wind and folded like cheap suits. Liberals have been calling for it for years.

Disparaging of patriotism is par for the course for people who enjoy all the benefits yet paid none of the costs of our freedoms.

Why do you only equate racism to Southerner's only? I was born and raised in Illinois... slavery existed there as well.... It wasn't until 1825 that Illinois abolished slavery.

Of course we know that it's because their messiah and his favorite race baiter told them to. But I just wanted to hear their excuses as to why they suddenly decided to be outraged.

Anyone else getting a whiff?

Black slaves paid by having NO freedom. They enjoyed NO benefits under the Confederate flag. Doesn't that count for anything?

The Confederate Battle Flag was never a National Flag of the Confederacy. It was carried into battle by several armies such as the Army Of Northern Virginia and the Army of Tennessee. It was also used as a Naval Jack by the Confederate Navy.

The Battle Flag was not called the Stars and Bars. It was called the Southern Cross.

The original Battle Flag design was a square flag and not a rectangle.

This is why a lot of people in the Military from the south fly that flag because it also represents the courage of southern warriors.

Symbol means different things to different people. why can't some people accept this very simple concept!!

It is necessary to disclaim any connection of these flags to neo-nazis, red-necks, skin-heads and the like. These groups have usurped this flag and desecrated it by their acts. They have no moral right to use this flag.
I agree, talk about the irony. Mob rules mentality. And your point about the symbol meaning different things to different people is my sticking point in all of and goes way beyond the Confederate flag. Many on this thread just can't seem to grasp this concept in a free society. Where does it all end? Wait until it's something they find meaningful (insert symbol/words of their liking) and a group of people put their narrow definition on it and call for its ban here or there. I guarantee they'll be the 1st to whine/complain loudly about it.
