I really dont understand your negativity towards trying to accommodate workers and families. Would you prefer those who cant work full time, have medical issues, family emergencies, handicaps, etc. be forced to quit their jobs and go on welfare?
Maybe there should be a movement where all people that think leave is vital to the welfare of mother and child, donate THEIR vacation to them, and offer to cover for the mother in her job?

That is also true, one of the crapshoots about living in society with other people. Regardless, this generation and all those after it are the people who will one day be adults and running society. It behooves all of us to give them a reasonable start.

I ask again: Are you a solitary animal?

Quote:
Solitary animals are those that spend a majority of their lives without others of their species, with possible exceptions for mating and raising their young. The antonym to a solitary animal is a social animal.

Animals that are solitary are often territorial and do not like the company of another animal in their territory and especially an animal of their own kind.

Here are some solitary animals:

Bears
Giant and red pandas
Moose
Rhinoceroses (except white rhinoceros)
Aardvarks
Koalas
Tasmanian devils
Platypuses
Sea turtles
WIKI

You are responsible for your own children. If you have to use taxpayers' money, the society should take the children away from you since you can't be responsible.
As long as you are a member of society you are expected to make a contribution. You may love individualism, but as you know you ARE NOT A SOLITARY ANIMAL.

I like your ideas, but you are either black or white.

Regarding morality: The only reason health insurance was developed was to pool resources so humans could take care of each other at the time of illness. IN a sense health insurance was a form of socialism until the CEOs figure they could extract extra money from the patients to make a profit.

You are presenting your position by repeating recycled republican slogans. I invite you to think about the fact that you are not a solitary animal.

You overlooked the point I made. You can take a "leave" (i.e. vacation or sick time or FMLA if you are overly exhausted) after climbing Mt. Everest if you want to same as a woman who gives birth.

So your example along with the idiot who wrote the OP article in question are both moot points.

Maternity leave is provided via sick/vacation/PTO time and FMLA.

Just so you understand ANYONE who works full time at an organization that offers sick/vacation/PTO time and ANYONE who works for mid size to larger organization on a full time basis have access to FMLA.

It is not a "special" perk only available to new moms (or new dads in relation to paternity leave).

Or just stop complaining that people use their own sick leave, PTO, vacation time or take unpaid leave when having a baby and let employers utilize temp services to cover for permanent employees time off. I'm sure those temps are glad for the work.

If you can't afford to have children, why have them?
Please explain in detail how taxpayers are taking on the financial burden of other people's children when the mother takes maternity leave.

The FMLA sets the standard for all kinds of leave pertaining to families. The government does not compensate companies when their employees take leave.

So, please explain...

Whats better a guarantee of your job back in a few weeks so you can continue to provide for your family and contribute to the tax base or generations of living off the tax base you dont contribute to.
She should then choose not to have children.

It's not crapshoots. It's irresponsibility. I have no problem with taxpayers covering some costs of those unfortunate but there has to be some warranty to minimize the "crapshoots." Right now, we just have hand-outs without any obligation whatsoever.

That's just wasting taxpayers' money.
