Not me. While clearly sick, depraved mother-****ers that I have no good word so for, I am not in favor of requiring private citizens to attempt to rescue others or naming them with attempt to shame when they choose not to.
They didn't merely "choose not to help him," they stood by and laughed as he struggled. That's a big difference in my book.

It makes them sicker and more disgraceful, but it doesn't change the ultimate picture IMO. Now, it would be a different thing if these people actively impeded rescue efforts or the such, but that didn't happen. No, they just didn't actively help or attempt to help. Simply put, their laughing and video did not cause or contribute to the man's death.
psst...they had cell phones to call 911 but they were busy using them to record this man's death.
Having a cell phone doesn't mean you have cell signal. You don't need cell signal to operate the camera. We don't know when they uploaded the video either.
Why do people think everywhere has cell signal? Most of the western half of the US is a dead zone. As is much of the eastern side.

Oh for God's sake - they were LAUGHING!
You're really going out of your way to make excuses for them. Why is that?
There are people who have always been this sick and twisted. Nothing shocking about this. And that is the saddest part. I'm not shocked. Angry, yes. Shocked, no. There are sick and depraved people live this everywhere, and it's been like this since man walked the Earth.

These are my thoughts as well. That's the rational approach. Emotions like anger and sadness can make you feel like they should be punished by law, but it's important to not let emotion replace thought. They were ultimately not at fault for his death. If they had put him in that situation or prevented a rescue, yes, but that isn't the case.
Now social punishment is a different story... I hope people make their lives miserable for it. That's how you deal with the situation - social pressure and ostracism, not law.

My first thought was what environment they grew up in. I would almost guarantee there was abuse or neglect that led to them never developing empathy.

Apparently something like 2% of the population is estimated to innately lack empathy (psychopathy). But I find it hard to believe that ALL of those teenagers just so happen to be in that group.
Either the estimated % is too low, a few of those teens will be doomed to have trouble sleeping from now on, or the way they were raised was damaging enough to manually erode their sense of empathy.

Not buying it. See the east coast of Florida near Orlando and how colorful it is.
Plus, I'm pretty sure they didn't go from frantically trying to call 911 to just saying, "F it, the signal's dead. Let's just enjoy the show until this drowning man is too. LOL LOL".
