First things first, kids are the most vicious animals on the face of the earth that wolverines pale in the face of.
Secondly, social media has increased the pack mentality a thousandfold and made it easy to destroy anyone without consequence. I fully believe if things don't change both legally and morally social media will be the death of us all.
Oh I agree. Kids having this social media at their fingertips is like giving loaded guns to a bunch of chimpanzees. And adults are using this social media the same way the kids are and even joining in with kids on it.
When I grew up the repercussions for fighting were minor.
Detention, In school suspension, very serious or constant fighting may result in a suspension.
Unless a weapon was involved (which I can not ever remember hearing about) police were not involved.
A lot of us stuck up for those that couldn't. Or should I say wouldn't.
Yep. Most of my suspensions were due to fighting for those who couldn't.

I've had to deal with my daughter being the target of punishment for standing her ground twice now - both after the "adults" neglected to deal with the problem.
Once when she was 9 and literally beat the snot out of an 11-year-old boy who wouldn't stop picking on her and her sister, I had contacted everyone who should have been able to fix it and nobody stopped him. After she told him to stop touching her - then proceeded to beat him bloody when he didn't - I was informed that she was getting expelled for fighting. Once I explained the situation and offered to inform the local news station that my daughter was getting expelled for being a victim, the principal changed her mind with a quickness.
The second time, she had a bully that blatantly picked on her in front of teachers and nobody tried to stop it. When the girl told her "I'm going to kick your @ss" my daughter slugged her in the hallway. The dean wanted to suspend her, I had the same conversation and told him to suspend the teachers who refused to do their job. Again, I offered to make the story go viral so that the local parents could see what a bang-up job the teachers were doing at keeping our kids safe. It appears that if you tell people you write for a living and offer to make them the star in your next article you can keep them from being idiots.
How did we deal with it in the 1940s/1950s?
"Stick and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me!"
Physical bullying was harshly dealt with.
Name calling was mostly ignored, even though the hurt feelings often lasted a long time.
Yes, in some ways the hurt still exists. But, I plan to get even. Our 50th high school reunion will be in 2019. I hope to go, to see who I outlived.
Yep, the ultimate revenge: YOU are DEAD, I am not!
Of course, that is assuming I live that long!
Maybe it depends on who is doing the name calling. At my jr. high it seems everyone got assigned some unflattering name... In high school it was mostly snarky mean girl stuff. I hold no grudges and I am always surprised when people I know do, and they won't go to the reunion because of something silly that happened thirty years ago.
Were there campaigns to end bullying? Were kids told to just deal with it and "man up?" I'm asking in light the whole Keaton controversy, but that's another topic.
I’m not a Boomer, but I’m going to comment anyway. Bullies need to be held accountable when they cause someone to commit suicide. After my cousin endured horrible hazing just to fit in, he couldn’t take it anymore. He left a note and hung himself in his room. My aunt has never gotten over the pain from this.
Fighting dirty was what I was taught -if someone throws a punch, hair pulling, eye gouging, and biting, is the best response.
I was taught there are NO rules in a street fight. As kids we weren't in a ring with a ref so anything went. Usually it was the loser that claimed "well, well, you fought dirty".
No, I won...
"Resistance is futile. We will add your technology and ability to our own." Lol, yea. Imagining that dark, techno voice.
Miss that series...
