A flawed proposal, rejected by one democrat and you say that proves that all democrats don't care. That's classic Trumpian logic, which will become a by-word for foolish assumptions, in our language.
One Democrat who has been selected consistently by other Democrats as leader. In fact, with a Republican in the WH, and Schumer as Senate Minority Leader, he is arguably currently the #1 Democrat in all the land.
The democrats want as many illegal aliens to come in as possible. Then they want to make them all citizens.
It goes beyond that, the illegal population is included in the census count. House seats, Electoral College votes and a lot of federal funding is distributed based on that count. CA has an estimated 5 extra House seats(and Electoral College votes), NY 2 , TX 2 and WA 1. Same study estimates those seats/votes would all be reallocated to 10 different red/purplish state if they were based on legal population, all 10 of them voted for Trump this last election.

Because Chuck does not want a fix, that's why. He wants to keep this issue in play right up to Nov--kids be damned.
To reiterate many Democrats do not want to have put their name to a no vote. The party may oppose whatever the Republicans come up with for Immigration reform but for many of them individually a no vote is walking the plank.
Alyssa likely has the financial stability/independence to be able to pick and choose jobs based on any criteria she wishes.
Many ICE employees, especially those supporting families, likely do not. And the ones with such obligations, they're expected to quit because how something they couldn't plan for plays out on the ground?.....Please .
Trump despite what he claims can stop it BUT......
“There are so many obstacles to legislation and when the president can do it with his own pen, it makes no sense,” Schumer told reporters. “Legislation is not the way to go here when it’s so easy for the president to sign it.”
Schumer is WRONG!. Legislation is always the best way to address something like this. Is he right that the (R)'s will try and out all kinds of crap into a bill? Probably so but then you can at least argue that.
Schumer: "Mr President, I call for a debate on this issue and an attempt to pass legislation but I ask you to stop separating families until we can see what we can accomplish".
Now the GOP are going to demand a wall but they will refuse to pay for it which will at least give Schumer a valid argument to not support it. Many Republicans will not either.
