I'm guessing you have never owned a copyright and had someone misuse the work then. Of course, there's a better chance you misused someone's copyright instead of the other way around. I'm a photographer. When someone buys a photograph of mine, that gives them the right to hang it on their wall. If they want to license a photograph of mine, that gives them more rights, but I get to decide if I agree to the license or not.

Springsteen did it, as did Aerosmith. If Ted Nugent said someone couldn't use one of his songs at an event, not that anyone would ever listen to that ****, but if they did....would you be ok with that?

There are separate permissions granted for performing someone else's song and playing a recording of their music or mechanically reproducing their music. If someone took Williams song and transferred it to a disc, file or soundboard they might need a mechanical license like people who sample music do. If Trump enjoys this sort of thing more than he does governing, he should have put a lawyer on retainer to consult with Harry Fox or some other agency to keep him above board.

The legally of this is why when I go to hear live music much of it is below par. Too many establishments won't pay the fees, so bands have to play their own material.

I agree with you on the Jack Daniels comment -- in that case they should have to pay for the rights.
Trump is using the music to promote himself, just like Jack Daniels.

The ignorance on this topic is astounding. There is tons of precedent clearly outlining an artist's property rights concerning the use of his/her music.

There's a difference between some family gathering or local rinky dink event playing a song they have downloaded or on a cd, but if you're in government, whole other ball game.

This incident once again demonstrates the total lack of respect for others' property rights and wishes than is one of Trump's more egregious and offensive traits.

Why should the Liar-in-Chief demonstrate respect for the law in this specific case, given his scorn for it in so many others? Nice example for the public, I must say, but of course his deluded base is ignorant and has no concern or appreciation for creative property and their creators' legal rights to them.

Hope Pharrell wins this one big-time.
Do you really think that Trump actually sat down with his people before this rally and said "I want that Pharrell song playing when I walk in and I want it loud". The answer to that is NO! And further, do you think he gives a crap about who Pharrell or his song even are. Again NO. Pharrell and his song usage issues are less of a concern for him than a small pimple on his considerable arse.

That being said. I do agree that a song called "Happy" was a bad choice by whoever it is who chooses the songs for these rallies.

Isn't this about the gazillionth time a Republican candidate has gotten one of these cease and desist letters for this type of thing.

Heck, the have the entire Lee Greenwood catalog to use. What more do they need?

I will agree that maybe that wasn't the song to play on such as day as this. It isn't President Trump who decides and chooses the songs for his rallies though. He’s still responsible.

Is this something that you heard him say or something that you heard fake news say? Nope, he really said it.

I missed the video of that rally but will watch it to see if what is being said is true.

There is no more caring person about all humans than President Trump.
As for the little bit that I have heard so far, he made a very heartfelt speech concerning the shooting at the beginning of the rally. This is straight up hilarious.

Lefties are going to really struggle to make President Trump out to not care about Jews. They are looking like fools trying.
No need for them to struggle at all. He’s shown time and again all he cares about is himself and his billionaire buddies.

Many times the artists do retain control of their own music. It all depends on the artist and his/her licensing agreements.

That's not how it works. That's not how any of this works.

The ignorance on this topic -- I can't decide if it's pathetic, hilarious, or just plain stupid.

If someone buys my work, it is their to do with it as they please, as long as it is not copied and resold, without my approval.

Yep, its pretty much country music or nothing. Even if an artist doesn't have a problem with Trump using his/her music, they know that they will be ostracized by the insane liberal cabal who will destroy them and think nothing of it.
