He makes a good point for the trade offs of "fly by wire" and "fly by pilot".
Do you have ANY idea of the advances in flying in the last decade or so??? ANY?
Most of it is requested by the Military - but it makes it's way into commercial.

U.S. senator calls on FAA to ground Boeing 737 MAX 8 |Reuters - 3/11/19
Is there anyone here that actually thinks that Boeing Air is willing to deal with the massive legal problems involved IF they had even a small suspicion of any danger to this aircraft?
The Lawsuits are so MASSIVE that any "grounding" is a very, very, very Serious business.
Unbelievable

I have no dog in this hunt ...... retired years ago and sold all my Boeing stock last year (which was a year too early) -
Grounding an Aircraft IS "serious business". Wrongful Death Lawsuits ARE "Massive".
Grounding an Aircraft prior to any Investigation is malfeasance - and Political.
IF it turns out that the FAA is at fault for not requiring Pilot Simulator training --
Is Boeing responsible? IS the US Government responsible?
Those are valid questions and valid statements.
Have a nice evening,
Reality is -- passengers won't choose that plane if there is another they can take until they know for sure.
Many folks are already uncomfortable flying -- they don't need to be wondering.
Percentage wise - the MAX is a small percentage of the aircraft flying by any US company.
Southwest flies more of them than other US Carriers.
There is no Airline that can or will "guarantee" that the Ticket you book will be on the Airplane that was on the original booking ....... your only option is DO NOT book a flight with anyone.
Angle of Attack sensor issues. What I've been reading for the last little while is saying there is an issue here. There have been two crashes for seemingly the same reason.
When hundreds of lives are on the line it's always better to err on the side of caution not on the side of being business friendly. There have been incidents that raise questions about the safety of these planes. It's not out of the realm of possibility there is a problem with the design or production somewhere.
No incidents here. Only on sketchy third world airlines. Let engineers and experts handle this. You and Diane keep your day jobs.
I've see this movie before ...... AND I've seen the Movie about the Pilots that think they know it all and don't need No Stinking New Training.
Thing is, Boeing sold this plane as being essentially compatible with existing 737s. Then Lion Air went down, and Boeing hemmed & hawed and said "Oh, yeah, there's this MCAS thing we probably should have told all y'all about." Boeing's word isn't really considered all that right now.
OK, so Lion Air is not an overly well-respected airline. But Ethiopian is - they're welcome in pretty much any airport worldwide.
Bottom line is always about profits and staying business for Corporations.
On the other hand - planes falling out of the sky and 100's of people dead as a result is NEVER going to be a "profit" glide path. The Lawsuits go into the Multi-Millions and take years of Litigation. Been there, done that with a lot of Depositions. It's heartbreaking.
Let's add to that the Engineers and Line workers making a machine that you believe is deliberately or "for profit" is Killing 100's of people --
You believe those people will just shrug about that. I know differently
I KNOW what the stress of being an Engineer that signs off personally on an aircraft -- even an aircraft that carries the President of the United States.
That Engineer or those who work on any design or execution, carry that burden of that safety DAILY.
The LAST thing they care about is "profit".
The FAA - in their infinite wisdom
Made the decision (for whatever reason) that NEW Software on an Aircraft didn't need new training.
I've see this movie before ...... AND I've seen the Movie about the Pilots that think they know it all and don't need No Stinking New Training.
Boeing is the ones who snuck a new automated flight control system onto their plane and didn't tell pilots about it. And all signs are saying Boeing F'd this up and introduced a big new risk. It's already established that the sensors their automated process fed off of got messed up. As for the government's role, this shows how FAA gets cozy with big business. What kind of relationship networks do you imagine FAA and Boeing have?
Boeing doing this and doubling down on it in the face of two downed planes as a result of it IS the case study of putting profits ahead of safety. Individual engineers are not malicious, but when you extrapolate to the dispassionate, profit-maximizing nature of a large bureaucracy, this is exactly what happens.
Here's more...this should scare everyone, because it shows you the same malfunctions HAVE happened here in the USA (just not killed anyone yet).
Pilots repeatedly voiced safety concerns about the Boeing 737 Max 8 to federal authorities, with one captain calling the flight manual "inadequate and almost criminally insufficient" several months before Sunday's Ethiopian Air crash that killed 157 people, an investigation by The Dallas Morning News found.
The News found five complaints about the Boeing model in a federal database where pilots can voluntarily report about aviation incidents without fear of repercussions.
The disclosures found by The News reference problems with an autopilot system, and they all occurred during the ascent after takeoff. Many mentioned the plane suddenly nosing down. While records show these flights occurred in October and November, the airlines the pilots were flying for is redacted from the database.
Has it been mentioned the EU grounded all Boeing Max 737s?
