Food producers make more profit on Junk than they do on healthy food. I heard that Lucky Charms has marshmallows in it because its more profitable to use sugar than grains to make the box heavier. Truth be told only a small percentage of whats in grocery stores should be called "food." Why not cut to the chase and only allow; fruits, vegetables, whole grains and dairy.
Let food stamp folks buy what they want. I don't care what they eat. it would be a nightmare to decide what is junk food. I consider most pre-packaged, fast food, and frozen meals junk food! many would disagree.
Michelle Obama was able to do it in schools. Use that same formula for store bought food. Everything is bar coded so its easy to put that in the system and block EBT payment on those items. Not a nightmare, pretty easy to do. As it stands lots of things are not allowed on food stamps as it is. People pay cash for those items at the end of the transaction.
Its funny how those on the right were against what Michelle Obama did and by the comments here those on the left don't like making people buy healthy items with food stamps. As a libertarian I am resist the government getting in the middle of things but in this case I would like to see it tried out.

The problem is, some people would consider whole grains to be "junk food". They might also object to a food stamp card holder buying organic produce.
There is no end to how people can pick apart someone else's food choices and food spending.
Your example is interesting but there are churches and some charities that will help with temporary housing. I ended up evicting someone from one of my properties. It was a couple with a kid. The guy had trouble keeping a job, had a good one when I rented the place to him. After a year of paying the rent he got fired and went the church route. Ended up paying the rent at the last minute three months in a row because he got a church to pay it. Then ran out of churches and time. And this was in Texas.
.
Seems to be an issue facing lots of North Texas churches. Some people go around to one church after another, asking for money. A relative of mine worked for a church for 20 years, there was someone coming to the church office almost every day asking for the church to pay their rent, their car payment or give them cash.
Many churches no longer hand anyone cash for any reason. They will help with clothing, canned food or give gas cards.

I don't think most people would give a hoot about this and the EBT recipients would just deal with it. As it stands there are definitions of prepared food which may or may not qualify for food stamps.
Use the Michelle Obama standard that was used in schools. Most agree to what is empty calorie junk food.
I say let Texas give this a try, if it works make it national. If it does not end it. Simple.
Weren’t the Republicans crying about all of the regulations a while back? Party of hypocrites.
Excuse me. Excuuuse me. This isn't an issue about the gubment sticking its beak into the private lives and business of citizens.
The subject matter here involves necessary rules for taxpayer-funded cash benefits meant to be used for basic food--not luxury items, fast food, and junk.
Good try, though.
