The Captain of a deployed aircraft carrier basically announced we are not mission capable. At least his retirement should be fiscally secure.

Saw that coming. He disregarded the chain of command but I really feel for him. His actions were out of sincere concern and desperation. Pray he is able to pick up from this point.

Gosh if only there were, say, a Secretary of the Navy who made high-level personnel decisions like this, then we'd all know who to hold accountable for making this one.

Nah, he's probably done. Time for him to take his pension and sail off into the sunset.

The military does not like drama.

By choosing to leak this to the press rather than deal with it through his chain of command the captain chose to attract extra attention to the situation and go outside military channels. That is a no no in the military and that is why he was removed.
I think the man is a hero for trying to help his personnel in a crises. The Navy was not acting in a timely manner and on that crowded vessel, time was of the essence. We have seen multiple times in this government where 'going through channels' means burying the facts, inactions and diversions.

The Navy may not like drama, but drama was thrust upon the Navy and they needed to deal with it forthrightly. The captain would like to have been anywhere else at the time, but he was the one there and he did the right thing by his people.

I note that the captain was fired by a political appointee, one not even confirmed by the Senate.

When one of their subs was in distress, the captain sent out a plea for help and the Soviets let all perish in order to save face. We chastised them for that.
Exactly.

You thought the same several years ago when Gen. Flynn was fired by a political appointee of the Obama Administration for going outside channels? Or General McChrystal?

Or is your outrage situational? Never mind, I/we know the answer.

Exactly. We saw how the Secretary of Defense reacted on CBS news in an interview, essentially pooh-poohing the alarm cited by the captain. The Secretary of Navy immediately stepped in and began taking the steps recommended by the captain.

I have no doubt that the captain leaked, or allowed the leak, in order to get public outrage on his side. No doubt, he knew this would cost him his job, but he was more interested in getting his crew protected.

But, the letter embarrassed the Trump administration. So, as you say, the captain was outed by a political appointee of Trump's.

10 year Navy vet here - that CO resigned his command the instant he transmitted that email.

Period, the end, carry on smartly.

There are no exceptions, there is no political correctness, there is no nuance. He agreed to the conditions of the UCMJ, the oath of his commission and the even less forgiving rules of being given the gold star of command. He knew them and he willingly and knowingly violated them. That does not make him heroic, valiant or courageous. It makes him a moron who will ride a desk until he is quietly retired right out of the Navy.

From the enlisted man's perspective, few things are scarier than a senior or commanding officer who is that casual with the chain of command. A breakdown of faith in that chain on a ship that has >6,000 people on it while underway could be catastrophic. He had to go and the Navy had to reinforce the faith in chain of command.

Captain Crozier! Captain Crozier!

Those were the shouts from crew of USS Theodore Roosevelt as they said goodbye to their captain.
