The NYT has once again cemented its legacy as a propaganda machine, nothing more. They are garbage news the like of supermarket tabloids. If they were so concerned about how politicians paid their taxes, how come they haven't done this to ALL politicians, or at least all the top ones in the house and senate? Oh wait, I'll go back to my original point - NTY is a propaganda machine for the left, nothing more.
The current audit has nothing to do with his billion dollar tax evasion where he claimed a billion in losses to be used against future income, for the huge losses he sustained in Atlantic City, where the losses were all of borrowed money - he himself didn't actually lose the money. It's as if you borrowed a million from the bank to buy a business, lost it, and then claimed a million dollar loss on having lost the bank's money, not yours.
He had to pay taxes for the first time in his life on the income from his reality TV show. He didn't like that. So he generated "paper" losses at businesses, and claimed that against previous years' income tax, claiming a 72.9 million dollar "refund" from the IRS of all the taxes he'd paid. Essentially, this man has never paid income tax in his life. Which makes sense for him - he is a sociopathic huckster, only out for himself, who will do anything to stay in power. He's the biggest danger our democracy has ever faced.
That refund was the trigger for the IRS to begin auditing him. He owed 95 million, and managed to whittle it down to less than two million by generating highly questionable paper losses.

They are under no obligation to release it to the Trump Organization at the latter's whim. This is especially true due to their continued fighting the release of it and his refusal using the false statement that he can't release them while under audit. He can release them whenever he wants. If the president wants to clear this up, he can release them.
They are protecting sources. The tax returns will have tracers on them both on paper and in the computer databases which would reveal who looked at what record when. Thus they are protecting sources.
He's making these Leftists look like the idiots they are. Taxes? Every real estate project Trump has done is a separate corporation. He is armies of tax lawyers and accountants do his taxes to find LEGAL ways in which to reduce his tax burden like every other corporation and many individuals do.
