Most people care about inequity not scarcity. They would rather share the misery of being equally poor than having a little more money and seeing a few make more money than them.

No, it isn't. Voluntary charity is not unconscionable. Added plus is that it lets society vote with their wallets. If society actually values artificially financially supporting the poor, they will voluntarily donate some of the fruits of their labor to do so.
