You asked for argument and debate. When it's pointed out that argument and debate is, in fact, the very thing that's happening, the goalposts are moved.

Yesterday's mores aren't holy cows beyond debate and contestation. In fact, the holding up of the past as a golden era where things were just better - that's what actual fascists have always been doing.

So Dr. Seuss's next book will have to have 50 pages of cute little animals, preceded by 127 pages of disclaimers designed to mollify every far-left fanatic pressure group in Creation?

That'll make it so much better a book.

No wonder Dr. Seuss died.

For those of you old enough, remember the warning on LPs? All that did was prompt certain musicians to be as vile, profane, and disgusting as possible... and then try that much harder to sell their material. It worked; the "cancel culture" of the time backed off almost completely. They found that the warning label made kids of the time (like me) buy that "offensive" material all the more.
Honestly. We are talking Turner Classic Movies here.

It is beyond stupid to punish the people of today for things that were considered normal in the past. It is also stupid to limit what people can view, hear, say, etc.

You mean aside from an added warning claiming classic movies are racist, sexist, and homophobic?

Thank you progressives for the warning, we had no idea classic movies were non-politically correct.

When does Jame Bond get labelled a sexist for being a womanizer?

I don't believe the cancelers really think that the cancelled books, movies, social media accounts, public speaking events etc. are harmful in themselves but allowing them to exist would be a sign of weakness. What they oppose is freedom of speech and anything else that gets in the way of their power grab. They decide what we can say, read, see or think.
These actions are a warning sign that should be heeded.
Read accounts of Hitler's rise to power in Germany, Mao's Cultural Revolution in China and the denunciations and gulags in Stalinist Russia.

Who's being punished?

They are showing the movies. Specifically taking them out of their media library and showing them. In full, un-edited glory.

Jesus H. Christ, life was a whole lot more pleasant before being "sensitive" became a fashion statement.

Get over your damn self! The world is ugly and mean and God didn't write you a guarantee at birth that your widdle feewings would never get hurt!

Who is cancelling the film? And who is this “left” I’m always hearing about - the ones that are the cause of everything many of you don’t like. Is it Joe Biden? Did he “cancel” Breakfast at Tiffany’s or Dr. Seuss? Did AOC do it? Did Nancy Pelosi or another elected official do it?

Try as I might, I could not find any mention on Google of Breakfast at Tiffany’s being “cancelled,” in the sense that it was being banned or censored or dropped from platforms that may broadcast it. What I did see were some critical articles about Mickey Rooney’s caricature of an Asian man that may have been acceptable at the time the film was made - even if it was in poor taste and added nothing to the film - but is offensive to Asian people, many of whom live and work in the US because...they’re Americans. The think pieces from “leftist rags” I read did nothing akin to “cancelling” the film or even recommending people not watch it. They were simply pointing out that there is a legacy of bigotry in American films that reflects the time in which they were made, and we should be aware of this and be willing to talk about it so that everyone understands that this kind of humor is not “funny” anymore. And yes, a lot of people do need to learn that.

Upon further Goggling, I began to see what this is really about: the temporary removal of some “problematic” films from some streaming platforms so that a note of historical context can be added for viewers. Whether or not you think that is a stupid idea, it is not “cancel culture” because it’s not being canceled. It is being temporarily removed so a short note can be added to give context. Nonetheless, if I wanted, I’m sure I could find a way to rent (because I don’t pirate ) a stream of Breakfast At Tiffany’s with a Google search and a few minutes. That’s because it is not cancelled.

And then there is the idea that it is the “left” that is doing these things and they are taking away America’s culture. However, that is complete ****. Corporate executives who own the rights to things like the licensing for old films or Dr. Seuss’s catalogue are the one’s making these decisions and corporate executives do not strike me as “woke” social justice warriors. They are shrewd business people, making calculations based on sales and marketing. They know that they now have Asian-American and other minority customers who may be offended by outdated bigoted depictions in film, books, art, and popular culture. They don’t want to potentially lose or alienate customers because a few little-known titles by a prolific children’s author that generate the company $0 revenue may be offensive. These are business decisions made by capitalists, not political ones made by AOC and the “Squad.”

Some baffle me with their partisanship and the hypocrisy it leads to. In one thread, I find a poster talking about the right and goodness of a corporation deciding an employee’s wages, regardless of whether they are “fair” because that’s free market capitalism, baby. And then in another thread, they lash out at corporations making business decisions to reflect changing attitudes and demographics. And these ridiculous people find a way to absolve their beloved corporations - symbols of the mystical and mighty invisible hand - by instead blaming corporate decisions on...leftists. A catch-all term which means nothing beyond the tribal hatred that is beginning to tear a great nation apart.

I really would like to see Americans on this forum stop fighting over petty partisan crap you catch on TV or your favorite bubbled media site and come to realize that you all have a common goal, common enemies, and are being bombarded by this culture war bull**** to distract you from the fact that your nation is becoming an oligarchy.

Blazing Saddles, on the other hand, spends a lot of running time on skewering just that sort of folksy racism and those who hold on to it.

If you can't handle the idea of someone pointing out that perhaps we shouldn't have made a joke out of this:

- then the creators of Blazing Saddles aren't in your corner.

Mickey Rooney's role is a blemish in an otherwise great film. So we put it in perspective, rather than forget or edit the film. Americans can't handle adult conversations like that?
Or, you know, you could just not watch it. But of course that won’t do. It must be that no one can watch it because someone doesn’t like it.
