I wonder why do schools care so much about dress codes. If kids can keep their pants up, that would be enough for me. Here's your diploma, good luck with that getting a job and paying your bills thing.
Reading the article, it appears he was a successful student and respected. If they really DID truly mean you can't wear a cape, there was more than ample time to tap him on the shoulder and tell him they were escorting him out of the line if he wears the cape across the stage.
In the future, if they want to enforce a dress code, they probably need to make it clear what the punishment will be - you won't receive a diploma. And if you're not dressed appropriately, you won't be able to cross the stage.
I personally think what they should do, in this case, is withhold his diploma until he completes community service hours for the school district. Give an inch, graduates will take a mile and each one thinks they are more and more clever.
Well...... I can tell you never worked in a high school. He was told. They were all told and told and told. Starting right after Spring Break the “you better not act like a fool at the graduation ceremony” cautions, lectures, and horror stories begin. Trust me, some version of “if you don’t dress properly we may keep your diploma” was said numerous times by various teachers multiple times. Sure, they are more worried about stuff like people wearing fake pants and mooning people, but just the thought of graduation hijinks haunt every high school administrator. Besides, I guarantee you capes are not permitted by dress code, if not explicitly so, then implicitly.

They care about it when it has the ability to cause disruption. Wearing the cape of another country has certainly has that ability. Just imagine if it had been a confederate flag instead of a Mexican flag.

HS student denied diploma for wearing the Mexican flag
A Mexican HS student was denied his diploma for wearing a Mexican flag draped over his graduation gown at the grad ceremony. The school says this is not about the M. flag, but about the dress code, which prohibits anything on the gown.
I personally have nothing against the M. flag, nor the heritage, but this is the USA; you should not be doing that. Not there. Want to walk down the street with it? Fine. But there are certain places you do not do that, IMO.
Both he and the school board has refused to apologize.
People just want to rebel for the sake of rebelling then cry about it. That's the reason for the endless loop of victimhood we are living in today. When there's no more worlds to conquer and no meaningful battles to be fought then folks start making stuff up to add a little drama and spice to their dull lives.
I agree. There is a time and place for such displays of "patriotism" but hey kid if you loved Mexico so much then why did you leave to come to America?
My wife is an immigrant from Ireland and she has never forgotten her heritage and she is proud to be Irish but she lives in America. America is her country now and Ireland is #2.
The kid has it all wrong. There is nothing bad about being from Mexico but it is America that has embraced him and allowed him to earn his HS diploma not Mexico. He should celebrate and embrace America.
I hope the school can stand its ground and not apologize at least until the weight of the cancel culture Karen's go on the attack.
