Big brother-ism at its finest. Either that or those defunding libraries are afraid of people that can read. Or maybe they have secret fetishes and afraid they cant resist checking out such books themselves, if they are available.
Seriously if you dont want to read a book you disagree with, well gee, just dont read it. If no demand from anybody in the community, and it will get culled at the next library fund raiser book sale. Seems simple enough. Course if you have a cultural agenda, one universal method is to ban mention of any ideas you dont like. Its just "Fascism 101" beginners level.
I suspect next item will be to completely ban the internet in public libraries. Cant have people exposed to all those radical ideas.
I would normally agree with your sentiment. However, the book ‘Gender Qu**r’, one of the books this library houses, depicts child pornography. Specifically, nine year old boys giving and receiving oral sex. It also depicts a young girl tasting her “vagina slime.”. Books depicting the sexualization of children have no place in a taxpayer funded public building, just as the act of sexualizing children has no place in our society. This should be something we can all agree on. There is no comparison between child pornography and hunting. To do so normalizes the sexualization of children, as though there is nothing wrong with it.
Again, if some parents are concerned, they need to exercise their parental responsibilities and monitor what their kids check out. Why should everyone without a problem with the book be held hostage to irresponsible parents who fail to supervise their child? These must be the same parents who appear to not know how to change the channel on the TV or radio when there’s something they personally find offensive.
I am conceptually familiar with some of the books given a middle school teacher in my district put some of the books on the summer recommended reading list. It has exploded at the District board meeting where a few parents have chosen to read out loud excerpts from some of the books. The language / content is not suitable for the board meeting, but available to minors.
Once again, the homes of some board members ( none have yet to take a public position) have been vandalized and harassment is obvious.
Videos of meetings are posted on YouTube. Appears most who are commenting are strongly opposed. A few are extreme in their opposition. A small number of parents seem to favor.
One of the particular books contain images in comic book form of two males engaging in oral sex.
Most people would agree the Kama Sutra or Joy of Sex ( yeah, I am dating myself) is not appropriate reading for 11-12 year olds. Why then is a book depicting oral sex between two males?
Thinking exposure is more likely to contribute to homophobia than acceptance.
have to respond to this. banning something from existing is different than excluding something from a collection. the left wants to ban things from existing and words from appearing. the right wants representative government.
They want to defund an entire public library over some of the books they carry, how exactly is this a representative government?

I think you’ve summarized this nicely.
Every time this issue is brought up, Democrats generally assure us that this outrage is overblown and that little kids do not have access to, nor are being taught about these topics in school. Yet, it seems like every other day, we see examples of how inappropriate some of these materials are for children, and we see examples of things like summer reading lists that recommend these books and/or actual text from teacher training sessions that encourage teachers to introduce these topics into the classroom, even at the elementary school level (one example off the top of my head is one from the San Diego Unified School District, which was recently in the news). These topics generally go well beyond “hey, some families might have two dads or two moms” and instead try to incorporate sexual information, or, try to tie these topics to racism (think “gender is something forced upon everyone else by evil white Europeans” - YES, this is in actual teacher training text!)
People generally live long lives. There’s plenty of time to think about gender, sex, sexuality, etc as an adult. I’m still not sure why people who are opposed to these types of materials being available to children are labeled as being unreasonable. I don’t have kids, but I wouldn’t want my child, say, at 9 years old, to have access to a comic book that depicts oral sex in any form, whether it’s between two men, two women, or a man and a woman.
Now THIS issue is a little different since it’s not like these books are being forced on everyone at the library. However, the funding issue was on the ballot and folks in that community decided that they didn’t like the services the library was providing and chose not to renew funding for it. While it might be unfortunate for some folks in the community, it was a ballot initiative that happened to lose.
