No one is in Federal prison just because of "simple marijuana" possession. These criminals had weapons charges and other offenses that were plead down to get a conviction. The other charges should be reinstated before releasing these people back on the streets.
98% of them are already on the streets. Only 150 are currently in prison.
Plus you are innocent until proven guilty. If Trump gets charged by the feds for the documents at MAL is he guilty of anything at that point?
And reinstating charges? Is that not double jeopardy?
I guess next he will Pardon (besides his son) all Meth, Heroin sellers, manufacturers, users, and then after that, all Liberals in jail or prison for child molestation. He wants all perverts who touched kiddies out of jail next! So they can come right back in your home towns!
All good. Target practice and we'll see if those pedophiles are allergic to lead.

I get what they're saying. The pardon is for simple possession charges only so if they had weapons or distribution charges those charges and associated penalties/sentence should still apply.
Apparently, according to some of the posters on this thread, the right time for the president to make moves to decriminalize marijuana is when the president is opposed to it.

Data from the U.S. Sentencing Commission show that only 92 people were sentenced for marijuana possession in the federal system in 2017, out of a total of nearly 20,000 drug convictions. People think all these millions are in jail for criminal possession of marijuana - when there aren't. Another ploy to get stupid people to vote for him.

The idea is to encourage states to do the same thing...as was clearly stated by the President.
It's not a HUGE step forward...but it is better than nothing.
