Interracial sex, such that separate races still exist, produces children.
It has a purpose and, as I stated elsewhere in this thread, purpose leads to normalcy.
So, the infertile, or the elderly should not be allowed to marry?
Pretty sure the primary point of marriage is commitment to the person you love. Not everyone has kids. And not everyone who does have kids, straight or otherwise, actually biologically produces them together.

Why would a license from the state be required for two adults to develop a committed relationship?
Legal protections provided by marriage mostly benefit children and the partner that will be left with dependent children should one partner run out.

Legal protections afforded to married people affect income tax, pensions and inheritance to name a few. Also the ability to visit in hospital and make healthcare decisions if the partner is incapacitated.
Without the legal marriage, the partner is treated like a stranger off the street.

Because the government's involved with tracking marriage, obviously. For all kinds of reasons. Taxes, legal stuff, etc.
Again I ask, do you think the infertile, or the elderly should not be able to marry? Or you make an exception for *them*? And, will you acknowledge that many heterosexual marriages do not biologically produce offspring, on purpose or otherwise? Or, are you just basically grasping for whatever reasoning that you can come up with, to justify what you actually think?
A marriage is not just about producing or growing a family, though that's definitely associated with it. I would definitely argue that the first and obvious function of marriage, is the formalized commitment to a life partner, made by monogamous human beings.
If marrying their partners makes gay people happy, fine with me. It doesn't harm me in any way.
I'll complain about identity politics, too. But this issue is not that. This one isn't about any communities. It's about actual, individual human beings, who would like to get married to the person they love, just the same as anyone has that right. But in order to get that right, they've had to struggle against and overcome all this bigotry from the religious right. It's just bigotry, is really all it is as its core. People just think gay people are icky and weird. Yeah, well, they're human beings, and Americans, too. And, they're gay. That's not going to change, so it's time we get over that, and live and let live.
Lots of people other than Democrats (lots people who are not Democrats) don't object to people entering into same sex marriages. Accepting SSM isn't a 'Democrats only' thing.
Exactly. But neither are there a lot of Democrats trying to end their rights, like Vicky Hartzler, the Missouri Congresswoman who literally cried at the podium trying to persuade the House to vote against this bill. I can’t imagine the amount of sheer hatred it takes to have that much feeling about what two people unknown to her are doing in the privacy of their home.
I’ll say it again- If you have never had SCOTUS decide on whether you should have the same rights as other people, you are a member of a privileged class.
