All "hate" crime legislation should be repealed. WHY someone committed an illegal act should be irrelevant. It should be the action of breaking that law that gets punished, not what the person was thinking or saying at the time.
That just dumb and it is not how our justice system works or should work. Since you’re for repealing hate crime legislation how about sentencing enhancements for being a gang member, using a weapon, during the crime, crimes on children, etc. lets just look at the crime and nothing else right?
Hell, I worked in a retail store back in the day, and someone got onto the PA and paged Jeffery Dahmer to the meat department! And no it wasn't me, but I knew who did it.

I do agree with the OP though.
Labeling something a hate crime puts the victim in a separate category; almost as if he/she is superior to other crime victims.
I have never heard of a crime committed out of love.
2 murder victims for example whose murders were similar should get similar sentences. I don't think one killer should get more time in prison because of a victim's skin color or sexual preference.

The kid was an ass, and deserves appropriate punishment. However, the whole "hate crime" thing is overdone and just stupid.
I kinda think back to one of the Die Hard movies. Make him stand naked with just a pair of "sign boards" saying "I'm a racist idiot". Either in front of the WM...or perhaps in the inner city part of town for a day.
The store I worked at was open 24 hours. No it wasn't a Walmart. At any rate there were weird pages all of the time. I remember one Sunday evening around 7:30PM the store was unusually empty, when in fact it was usually quite the opposite. I asked where the hell everyone was, and come to find out one of the employees made the page "attention _________ shoppers the time is now 7:30PM and our store will be closing in approximately 15 minutes. Please gather your merchandise and proceed to the front checkouts. And once again thank you for shopping at your______!" Juvenile? Yes of course, but all in good fun. Needless to say it sure as hell cleared the store out. The funny thing is the majority of the customers seemed to forget it was open 24 hours, and simply did as they were instructed, as if they didn't know any better.
Wonder if anyone in states bordering Mexico ever got on a Walmart PA system and yelled out "immigration" in Spanish.
Shooot - it doesn't have to be in a state bordering Mexico. You could yell "La Migra" in several businesses in areas around Seattle and start a mad exodus for the back door.
