I'm not a prude, and pretty much far from it, but why do these terms annoy the crud out of me? And with the term "kiddo", I'm just referring to when someone refers to their kids as "the kiddo/s" or "my kiddo/s", not so much as when someone says "hey kiddo, come here".

That doesn't really seen to have anything to do with being a prude, so much as just finding cutesy slang irritating.

They annoy me, too, but only mildly. In the grand scheme of things, they are like a fly.

I only ever heard "kiddo" used as referring to one's children on City-Data, not in real life. I don't know when that started, but no one said it when my daughter was (28) was growing up, so it's a more recent affectation. "Hubby" sounds too cutesy and childish.

Never knew anyone who used "Wifey", but the Judy Blume novel was pretty good.

Wifey means a specific thing in some circles.

https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=wifey

Hubby has been around forever.

Kiddos bothers me, too, but mostly because a lot of mom bloggers overuse it. I guess they think it sounds more cool and fun than children.

Huh. Never knew that one. Kinda cool, my wife is also my wifey!

As to OP...I think we all have words/terms which annoy us. I can’t remember what they are off the top of my head, but I KNOW I have a few which are irritating for reasons I can’t put a finger on.

I don’t read mum blogs, so I’ve been spared. However the term kiddo has been around long before mum bloggers were even a blip on the radar. My gran called her son kiddo, never thought much of it other than is was a term of endearment and her nickname for him.

Yep, I’m struggling to think of words or terms that annoy me too , obviously they aren’t pressing for you or me at this moment.

“The wife” when referring to one’s own wife, instead of saying “My wife.”

Never heard a woman say “The” husband instead of “my husband.”

The main issue I have is the reciprocity and it would be more annoying/inappropriate if there were a power dynamic involved.

Take, for example, a 65 year old CEO, who also happens to be a grandfather, speaking to a 22 year old junior employee who they had never met. If the CEO says, "Hey Kiddo, nice to meet you", is that appropriate? I think the question that comes into play here is, could the 22 year old employee reply back, "Nice to meet you too, Gramps." If the answer is no, then it's really not appropriate for the person with a higher power dynamic to be doing it. I know that kind of thing goes on all the time, but this forum is asking about model behavior, so that's not really model behavior. More about that here:

Among family and close friends, I think we can allow more leeway for pet names, as long as there's mutual respect about it.
