As the Ohio Governor said today about wearing masks. It's not a political issue of left or right, liberal or conservative, Republican or Democrat. It's a public health issue. We are truly all in this together. Wearing a mask is nothing new. They even wore them during the flu pandemic in 1918. It's truly not a great sacrifice to do so.
Staten Island is not kidding around. They didn't just shame another shopper for not wearing a mask - they cursed at her and en masse drove her out of the store. Goes to show you how bad COVID is there, as they lean politically more toward the people here who cry tyranny and but my rights.
Curious about if we'd get to this stage if we had more cases. Probably not, the south is not quite this in your face. But I'd be tempted.
West Cary - went to Amberly Publix again and HT in Cary Park. 95% of people in Publix wearing masks, but it was packed! Definitely some Memorial Day house parties going on today.
60% of HT customers wearing masks. No one was rude and everyone going about their business.
Next was to check restaurants like Ricci's in Cary Park, etc but had no time today.

Ricci's is still takeout only. They said they'll be opening 50% probably this week or next week. In a place that small, I'm not even sure it makes sense to open up at 50%.

I think this is at the opposite end of the spectrum. Bullying someone into wearing a mask is not the right way to go about it either.
(Side note, assuming wearing a mask is effective at containing the spread, what % of people would need to be wearing a mask for it to eliminate it spreading in public spaces? I know for vaccines, herd immunity works if 80-85% of people are vaccinated for a particular disease)
No need to assume. Masks are, in fact, effective at reducing the spread.
Masks aren't 100% effective at preventing the spread, so your question doesn't have an answer.
Are they more or less effective than coughing or sneezing into your elbow?
There are some people that legitimately can't wear a mask for medical reasons. Probably not a ton, but enough that it's silly to publicly shame people.

I guess that was why I asked - is there any point in shaming a handful of people who choose not to wear a mask? It's a huge problem here because we are nowhere near to a majority of people wearing a mask in indoor spaces but on Staten Island where the large majority are, it's probably not something to get as upset over if 90% of people are.
Also a stupid question but since I haven't been to a sit-down restaurant in weeks, what are the protocols of wearing a mask as a customer? (I assume you have to remove at some point to eat/drink......)

It's not so much about the coughing/sneezing, as hopefully most people cover their mouths in some form when they do that. Neither one is going to do a super job of preventing explosive spread, but they're obviously both better than just doing it into the air.
It's the regular breathing where a mask makes a significant difference. Any sort of covering helps reduce droplets you emit into the air, but you obviously aren't going to walk around breathing into your elbow the whole time.

If think we were seeing cases from regular breathing during short trips in public places, we'd be in deep deep trouble. We would certainly have more than 1450 cases in Wake County, population 1.1 million.
Seems like extended exposure is the key, which is why nursing homes, relatives, and close contact workplaces like meat packing plants are the hardest hit by far.
