Been a bit. Here's a North Carolina observation that I've made before but bears repeating...

I'm in a rural supermarket. As I walk in I hear a quick conversation between a person on the checkout line and the checkout person. "Have a great day". "I hope you do to". "I always do". I loved it, but went on my way.

After I picked up my items, I went to checkout. The checkout worker asked if I had a rewards card. I didn't. He then asked the person in the other checkout lane if they had one for me. "Of course I do, here you go". "See" said the checkout worker, "You saved $16 and he got points". They both gave big smiles and said "I hope you have a great day". I of course said thank you and the same, smiled, and went on my way.

This is North Carolina. Everywhere I go I'm hit with the Southern hospitality and sweet people. I love it here more every day.

A new observation...

I'm a construction man, as I've said multiple times here. This career means change often, moving to a new project each time another ends.

In NYC, starting a new project means "what subway do I need to take". I always get to go home at night.

Here in North Carolina, and I assume most everywhere outside of a large city, new projects often mean traveling to a new location... and at times living out of a hotel during the week and going home on weekends. Many workers do this and come from all different states. It's a challenge, as we miss our families.

I've gained an even deeper respect for my blue collar teammates. I've only done this a short time, but for many it's the way life is. Also, they will do whatever it takes to provide. Stand up, hard working, anonymous heroes... anonymous to everyone by their loved ones.
