Given that none of these people are good looking, except the doc husband, perhaps they just grew close and got caught up with each other. It probably would have happened regardless of what Holly looks like.
The same way its wrong when a woman leaves her husband who loses his job because he can't provide the same way anymore for a man with More money. It goes both ways
It really makes me wonder what the statistical probability of this is compared to that of men who leave their wives for younger women...would be interesting to see some raw data.
My purely anecdotal guess is that there is probably a higher percentage of wives who are standing by husbands who earn less/have experienced a decrease in income than husbands who are standing by wives as they age, but I could be wrong. But, yes, being financially insolvent, if that becomes the case, is obviously difficult on marriages.

I thought the story was that the biographer kind of pushed herself on him. Like, she became infatuated with him. If it hadn't been for that, nothing would have happened. That's how I understood it.

I think the former is far more common than the latter.
I know it's anecdotal, but I can only think of one instance in my life where a woman left her man (boyfriend at the time) purely for financial reasons but I can think of probably 15 or 20 instances where a man left his girlfriend/wife for a younger or prettier thing based almost solely on looks.
My wife is 65. It is a treat every night when she takes her clothes off and gets ready for bed. I've enjoyed that for 46 years. Now, she keeps herself within the limits of her age. Diet. Exercise. Poise. Well mannered. Now, as for me, 66, there was this train wreck and...

I'm sure she feels the same!
I have a brother-in-law who swoons over my oldest sister every time he sees her wearing something even slightly revealing. He "Mmm's" and "Ahh's" and can't take his eyes off her. I saw it with my own eyes a few times and couldn't believe it. They've been married over 20 years. It's cute.
I remember the stories about Rose Kennedy going out and playing golf and shopping and whatnot after Joe Kennedy had a stroke. He screwed around on her all through their marriage, and when he was incapacitated, she made sure he had care and then went about her business of enjoying life and spent very little time with him. He had to sit there trapped in that body, drooling and unable to speak and knowing that he had fully earned her abandonment.
Interesting, I don't know that. I guess the people who talked about her wanted her to stay at home and nurse Joe Kennedy while life passed her by. Meanwhile, he'd already lived enough for two or three men at that point. At least she made sure he had care. For good measure, she should have hired one of his mistresses to do the hard work of being his home-attendant.
